TEC Breath Controller (code 10) error in device manager, randomly doesn't work in Rea
Hi all,
this thing is bothering me from a long time. I'm randomly having this issue
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
{Operation Failed}
The requested operation was unsuccessful.
since I bought and installed the breath controller.
The controller seems to work fine in its software even if I have this error but sometimes it doesn't work in Reaper and I have to unplug and re-plug it again, sometime I have to restart Reaper and sometime I even have to restart the PC itself.
It is very annoying, especially when you are in the middle of a project. I already tried different solutions I found on the internet (generic solutions for a CODE 10 error) but the issue shows again randomly.
I also tried different usb ports without success.
I have many devices plugged in my PC but since I'm not able to reproduce the error in a deterministic way I don't know how to do some troubleshooting.
Is there anyone out there that experienced the same problems? Is the problem Reaper related?
Thank you.

In my Live setup with an Audio / Midi interface, three Keyboards, a Control Surface device and a TEC BBC v2 - all connected via USB - , I also have the issue that sometimes the BBC is not present in Reaper. Restarting Reaper mostly does not help. I need to restart the PC. That is why I suppose this is not a Reaper problem.
It never fails while Reaper is running. Only when starting the PC (which automatically starts Reaper in my setup).
I do not have any clue for a solution right now.

So maybe is the BC itself that it is faulty. Or maybe the drivers are not so good.
The BC software always work even if the issue is present.
Usually I'm able to solve it by unplugging and plugging again the BC, then I reset the MIDI controllers and it starts to work again.
Other times I have to restart Reaper or the PC itself, like you.
I'm trying to reproduce the issue, I'll update this thread if I manage to get something.
All the other devices have no problem with Reaper or Windows in general.

This supports my impression that it's a problem of the Windows driver.

Yeah I think the same, there should be something wrong in Windows driver.
Unfortunately it seems that there is not so much support from the developers on this side and I don't know how to describe this issue to them if I'm not able to understand what is causing it.
The strange thing is that it happens randomly, for example now it seems to work fine but I don't know what I do to get that. I restarted many times and it seems to work. I'm not sure it will not happen in the future anyway. It could be even some sort of power settings in Windows.
I will continue to investigate.

I did some other little tests.
When the device is giving you an error in the device manager you can solve it by disabling and enabling it again, after you did this you should be fine. No need to unplug and re-plug the usb.
So the question now is: why sometimes it fails at startup and some others not? Well, I don't know why but it seems a faulty driver that is doing wrong at startup.
Now I managed to write a little script that I scheduled to start 1 minute after log on that disable and enable the device again after 10 seconds.
I tried many times to run it manually to see if it solve the issue and the answer is: not really! It randomly doesn't start correctly after executing the script and I need to execute it again even 2 or 3 times more, but not always.
It appears to work fine at startup anyway, I restarded many times and it seems to make it work fine but I have to test it a lot more to see if this workaround is reliable.

There also is the action "reset all Midi devices", that should do this for all Midi devices. Did you try that, as well ?
I seem to remember that this did not work for me, but I found it rather hard to check out...
Thanks,
-Michael

No that action doesn't work for this issue. It works only once you have solved the problem in the device manager.
I'm talking about disabling and enabling the device in the device manager, it seems the only way to solve the issue. It is a sort of driver restart thing.

There is but you have to install devcon then you can setup a simple batch file and schedule it with task scheduler.

When I start my headless live system, I run a Python script, anyway, that detects if an USB device is on a "wrong" USB port and tweaks the Reaper ini file appropriately.
Maybe same can find out if the TEC driver has a problem and restart it ...
Thanks again !

Just a little update. I was using the Breath controller with Reaper and suddenly stopped working, no errors in the device manager, in its own software works, in the midi device list on Reaper is on and it is ok, I did a reset but it still didn't work.
It seems a Reaper problem now, the only thing I did to solve is to unplug it and plug it again, then a reset and it worked fine....
