Default CLA-76 is too slow to compress transients

Even at its fastest setting.

ReaComp has a nice pre-compression that hits those transients nicely. It's a little too plain sounding, though.

Are there any other compressors with pre-compression? I would love TDR Nova to have pre-compression.

If you don't need it for live performance, you could use every compressor with sidechain trigger in pre mode. Just copy the target track, pull the copied track backwards in time a view milliseconds and send it as sidechain to the target (pin 3 and 4). Only thing to do is setting up the compressor to use the pre audio from channel 3 and 4 as external/auxiliary source. And bingo! You are now able to set up the attack and/or time shift until it fits your needs and gets those nasty transients.

If you just need faster attack, take a look at the JSFX plugins directory. Even better with reaPack. There are some really nice compressors like stillwell compressors, mrelwoods new "Mother Comp" with 0.1 ms fast attack and so on. Even a 0 attack compressor is there. And most of them have more character than reaComp. Just test it. You will be surprised how good sounding those gems are. (To find them just enter "comp" in the search/filter field.)

Greetings
Eli

Not sure what technology ReaComp is using, but it seems so easy to just look ahead in the digital realm.

Your trick is worth try.

The problem with using negative delay on the sidechain is that it will cause the release to be “early” (as well as the attack).
Ideally, you need a “hold” parameter to get the release where it should be.
An envelope follower (in sidechain) with appropriate parameters/setting should do the trick.

In this case its about the transients, so there is no need to pull the trigger audio more the 10 or 20 ms. Only bummer would be to keep in mind, that every change on the source needs to get updated on the pre trigger audio too.

You can use JS Time Adjustment on channels 3/4 and save a track.

sanity check - attack knob on an 1176 is reversed. 7 is fastest, 1 is slowest. It's slowest setting is faster than many other compressors. 20-800 microseconds.
