As a matter of interest (and realising this opens a deep rabbit hole) why do you assume aliens will have "culture" let alone expressive arts?

I think most of our "aliens" are just humans from the distant future trying to save us from a terrible fate of losing art, music, all of our hair, and having eyes way too big for our heads and heads way too big for our bodies.

But it's quite possible there's music out there (or even in here) entirely outside our range of hearing. It's probably still mostly in 4/4 tho...

Absolutely. No doubt there is likely life out there somewhere, but to attribute any kind of human physiology or behavior to extraterrestrials is a stretch.

It's very unlikely they are specialized on perceiving air pressure waves in a range of 20 ... 20.000 Hz.

Haha, interesting question!

If the extraterrestrials do visit Earth, they will likely do so for a
reason beyond voyage exploration and mere curiosity. And that
raises the question: what does the earth have to offer that is so
special that other planets do NOT have to offer?

Let's think for a bit ... what will it be?

I brought the arrival of the aliens to life in this story: click here (PDF).
And of course, the arrival of the aliens is celebrated in this current
song.

Well, the idea behind this is that the aliens find a special protein
resource here on earth that no other planet has to offer. But read for
yourself.

There are millions of species of beings on THIS planet, already.
What do the cockroaches listen, too?
Also, what makes you think aliens would be styled after one of the least 'popular' species on the planet?
In the grand scheme of things, there aren't really that many humans around.

Some funny, interesting replies yes..but think to make more informed decisions we simply need..more data.
Data can come in form of human perceptual experiences,or actual measurable scientific resources/statisitcs.
Very happy to see that a conversation,a discourse, can take place on this topic, without ridicule or flat out denial of observable phenomena..this is progress.

Having differences of opinions is welcomed here.
MORE DATA,please.

All living things respond in one way or another to vibration. Our music is frequency vibration through the air. Light is vibration extending through vibrations we cannot see (or hear). Atoms, molecules the quantum field(s) string theory and on and on. Not to mention geometry (musical arrangements maybe?) So it will depend on the foundational structure of the alien life we eventually encounter.

Whales, elephants, birds, bees, etc, etc, etc. Are they communicating or maybe singing? Or are their songs how they communicate? As already said above...we need a hell of a lot more data.

In the mean time...keep on singing and playing. Some"one" out there may be listening.

Music is ultimately maths so if they do respond to vibrations then there's a decent chance it's something we can share and understand.

Math,vibration+universal laws.
According to both ex canadian minister of defence paul hellyer and aerospace billionair robert bigelow..some of them walk among us.
Totally human looking (undetectable by majority.)

#If the above=true then at least 1 might be using REAPER! heh. and have access to all music we do as humans.

With the arrival of musician tom delonge, this also seems highly likely the others know what we do and so much more (apparently capable of pre_cognition.)
Physicist hal puthoff session here.

As for religious belief systems..by their very own definitions..divinity is of an E.T. nature.
So,maybe "god","buddha", (insert faith deity here) is a dj after all?

I would also imagine that these others may have senses way beyond humans current comprehension,so 'their music' will reflect this.

Evolution through natural selection. Different species on our planet hear vastly different frequencies.

Research shows that animals on this planet do not appreciate, or even like, the music we humanoids produce. For example, cats will switch it off if given the chance, or move as far away from it as possible. Ditto monkeys. So, there may be some unique ability or faculty we have, that no other life form on this planet has. Which mean the ability to enjoy music may be quite rare.

Of course, like the existence of extra-terrestrial life itself, all one can do is speculate. The latest grainy videos (officially endorsed by the government, as if that is supposed to mean anything) by no means prove that ET exists. Discussions of whether they have Art or nor, while fun, are even more tentative.

Some interesting insights here but isn't the elephant in the room in this discussion an idea of what music actually is?
Or why why we have it at all. The answer for me is largely about emotion and communication but also something about its role in the wider culture. It's a complicated story and as far as I know, not fully explained. Wouldn't we have to assume aliens have at least some of these things in common with us including (as has been pointed out already) certain physiological parallels both in terms of perception but also maybe things like a heart system that might be the basis for rhythm.

The idea of an alien civilisation that did not have music is very strange, is it not? Imagine trying to explain why we do!

Music is an ideal medium for interstellar communication as it is a hybrid of logic and emotion. It so happened that I worked on one project with the guys from https://www.grabmyessay.com/making-personal-statement and wrote an article on the topic. Historically, interstellar communication has tended toward formalism, or systems in which elements are manipulated according to stringent rules. The idea is that aliens could tease out the rules of the system without understanding what the symbols themselves mean. And music is sometimes perceived as the opposite, ineffable, something that is not so much understood as felt.

Of course, it works the other way too. The Voyager 1 and 2 space craft carry golden records, which contain a selection of music from and prior to the late 70's. Voyager 1 is currently out past the heliosphere, over 23 billion km from Earth. However, it's not passing any nearby stars anytime soon. Even then, the chance it will be noticed by aliens is very small. If aliens sent a similar craft this way, our chance of detecting and intercepting it with our current technology is virtually non existent.

Mmmmhh... I don't think music will be about communication.
For two reasons:

1. If the aliens are communicating really closely, if they're
going to visit us all, then they must have developed some
kind of FTL drive. They would be so technically superior to
us that it would go beyond our imagination.

2. Communication only succeeds through what we and the aliens
have in common. So what do we have in common with them? What
will we both know? Answer: The physics of space and mathematics.

So everyone knows the hydrogen atom, and the natural numbers,
the whole numbers, the real numbers, the number "e", etc. An
initial communication would take place by the means of this.
But not via music.

Well in some senses the technology required for supraluminal travel may not actually be beyond our realization.
Apparently some of the stella races use "toroidal total immersion engines/\ jet electromagnetic plasma engines"..explained in some details <here>

They use frequency maps..and according to them, all matter is manifested by means of harmonics of frequency (creating standing waves/nodes of energy..forming matter)

In my earlier days, the concept of "alien music" was introduced through the movie starwars (the cantina scene)

So,if all physical manifestations are formed by frequencies, nodes of energy, standing waves..then the consciousness aether itself must be a musical score of un_imaginable,infinite complexity.

Its amusing that organizations like SETI work on the arrogant and narrow minded assumption that intelligent life must have invented radio and electricity as we know it.
In the billion to 1 chance that they will hear some of the noise created by our technology as we know it.

Which we will move past one way or the other.

I suppose that they only want to make contact with like minded civilizations that are not Alien at all?

Better than doing absolutely nothing I guess.

True, if you’re talking about physical human biomass, but anthropogenic mass (or human-made mass), which has recently doubled roughly every 20 years, has now surpassed all global living biomass… so there’s that

Not that I think there is anything to it, but the entire universe lives by the same laws of physics so it stands to reason, given the same rules, suitable similarities could ensue.

What evidences do you have to prove this to be true? main stream science? the same science that lies to the masses for generations?

Apparently speed of light is not actually constant throughout and physics will change with density// rate of vibration// relative speed// sense interpretations.
"Time" is malleable to them, not linear in our limited human senses.

According to the pleiadians, they have piano and very similar instruments to human culture.
They have advanced ai systems with replication devices, but some actually prefere hand crafted items.
This race are not slaves to their ai.

Probably no need for a disclaimer, good sir/madam

The vast majority of users here aren’t out for offensive trolling, and the very few people who find offense probably don’t realize that being offended raises blood pressure and heart rate, literally reducing their own lifespan over something completely avoidable
