Default What MIDI stream is my Yamaha MX61 putting out?

I saw in the track meters that my MX61 was outputting MIDI for no apparent reason. I thought it might be a clock or some other ack function. I looked for a midi analyzer and found JS: MIDI Examiner and JS: MIDI Logger. Both show activity. But what? See screen cap.

Notice that the meter shows a slow pulse that doesn't correspond to what the two JS effects are showing. Reaper is not playing. The only manual activity on the keyboard are a few notes played where the logger window shows colored events. Everything else is the MX on its own. Is this just a clock?

The midi connection in and out of the MX is standard 5-pin, not USB. But something that the MX is receiving is causing its displayed patch number to indicate it has been edited, though nothing has apparently changed in it.

Wondering what's going on.

(sorry for the image being so huge... it's not that big on my end.)

It is a bit unclear what is what there, but I guess it is your Yamaha MX61 that sends all those FE messages. This is an "active sensing" system real-time message that is sent every 300 ms when nothing else is going on. This is a kind of "heart beat", so that attached devices can know that the connection is still up (cable not broken or similar).

An old thread about Yama active sensing here https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=10550

Thanks, Fabian. I thought it would be something like that. Then as soon as I read the words "active sensing" in your reply, I remembered the term from back in the day. Pre-internet. Occasionally having to be aware of something having to do with it. I don't recall the details.

But I'm wondering, is that all that's happening with the MX? The fast stream with the FE messages isn't aren't the much slower pulsing I'm seeing on the midi meter. That's what first caught my attention.

Back in the day a MIDI sound module would detect that the MIDI controller supported Active Sensing, and then automatically issue All Notes Off if it would no longer receive Active Sensing messages.

BTW, I also see F8, which indeed is MIDI clock.

Anyway, if it's bothering you, and you can't disable Active Sensing and/or MIDI clock in the MX61, then I guess you could filter them out (e.g. using JSFX).
