Default moving files after the event to folder AUDIO FILES

HI,
you may think the simple answer is "try it and see wyn wyn"
however, i've made such good headroads into keeping track of files after a lot of missing data etc, that i don't want to go back to square one and lose some important work in the depths of my systems.

I have learnt to make a folder AUDIO FILES in the project settings to keep all my recorded data in and thereby see easily where my project is and also make sure i move everything together when i back up for example to external HDD.

Can i now, (for those old projects, or new ones on other machines where i forgot to do the AUDIO FILES recording path thing)....retrospectively make a folder and drag the accumulated data into it?

Will it be instantly accesible on a project load, will they move ok when i move to other places etc.

a simple question thats making me nervous!

your help in this is much appreciated.
best regards

You can pretty much do that but another way that ensures you'll get all audio on project in case stuff is scattered around is to open the project, save as from the file menu and tick the option to copy all audio to project folder.

WW, you can also go into old projects and check where project audio is located using REAPER's Project Bay.

Look in the Source Files tab, within the Path column. You can also right-click files in this column and copy or move them to the project media path, or indeed any location -and REAPER will adjust its project references to remember where they've been moved to.

that's helpful.
i now have a number of routes to sorting my files out.

what is of value in asking a simple question is: of course i could play around and see what happens, but as i'm not very tech orientated, i (and probably others) worry about incorporating legacy 'problems' into 'our' actions etc.

To hear from experienced users and their validation of a process is valuable.

Many many thanks to you all

hi again planetnine...are you around?

i followed the plan...but i am unsure as to where 'project media path' is
i had a tab for media items, don't think it's that, & a dialogue box at the bottom.
A prompt would be appreciated
cheers

Go into the "View" top menu and you will see project Media/FX Bay as an option.

Takes all the guesswork out.
FWIW I have gotten into the habit of always ticking "create subdirectory" and"move project media to subdirectory" which puts everything you need in one folder.
If you decide you want to have the project media in more than one place, use the copy media option instead of move media.
What you DO need to be sure of when saving like this is that you are in the top menu of your reaper projects, or you will find you have saved your new project in the project folder of what you were working on last!
Done this SO many times by mistake....
