Default Screenshots: animated gifs of turns!

Check this out! This is something I've always wanted to do, and yesterday I finally broke down and started on it. (I used some code from Cockos' WDL for the actual GIF encoding.)

Chess:

Dorp4:

Checkas:

And, bonus! The first-ever shot of Batel in action! I'm still in the make-a-fun-toy-before-you-make-a-game stage with it. But hey, there are rockets and splosions and a physics engine...

So... now what? Should animated gifs take the place of the static pngs on the website? Would it be annoying or distracting or perhaps awesome? I guess I will just have to experiment...

Just stumbled over this thread browsing the Cockos forum...

I'm not familiar with Wifight, so I'm not sure if that does help you but regarding making animated gifs:
Have you seen Licecap already (also a Cockos product), makes doing animated gifs from screencaptures really easy.

http://www.cockos.com/licecap/

Just in case you missed it...

Thanks nofish. Actually I'm not using Licecap directly (yet), but I am using the exact same code as Licecap. I hooked into the same animated GIF writing API in CockosWDL that Licecap uses for these autogenerated gameplay shots. I will definitely be using Licecap itself to make some animated screenshots of the rest of the Wifight UI though. It's pretty neato!

Also, if anyone wants to see a visual demo of the extra bit of optimization I added, I posted a pic of it to my dev blog.

WDL's GIF writing support is nice and easy to use. I added an extra layer of optimization on top that detects unchanged areas between frames and encodes only the smallest single changed rectangle
Saving half the filesize is fantastic, kudos!

Nice.
You should probably suggest Justin to implement it...

LICEcap already has that (it uses LICE's LICE_BitmapCmp() to detect the changed rectangle).

I should have known you're lurking anyway.

As far as how to use the gifs on the site goes... maybe as a mouse hover effect on the static pngs? Just for the full version of the site though- the mobile version (exists?) wouldn't really want to use the bandwidth for it, on top of the whole touch-screens-ruin-hover-effects issue.

Edit: ok, should have looked more closely at the 5 most recent moves screens at the top of the home page... Not bad.
