Focusrite Midnight EQ plug-in crashes Reaper
Hi,
I recently renewed my subscription to SoundOnSound magazine and as part of this was offered the chance to download/activate the Focusrite Midnight plug-in suite.
All went well and I could run the compressor plug-in fine but on loading the EQ plug-in Reaper crashed.
Has anyone had experience of this issue? Should I capture a crash dump for the Cockos developers and attach?
I'm running latest Reaper version on Windows XP 32-bit if that's any help.
Thanks for any help,
Simon

I have experienced crashes with midnight both in AU and VST modes. I have not yet tried their older version update to see if it is in the update, or in the software itself just not quite jiving with Reaper yet.

Midnight crash update
I managed to capture a crash-dump from Reaper when trying to use the Midnight-EQ pluging and have sent that to Focusrite support to see if that helps them determine the source of the problem.
From my basic analysis of the issue it definitely seems to be a plug-in issue as the stack trace pointed to various points within the Midnight software. Seems the plugin may be trying to address some memory that is no longer valid! However, if one of the Reaper developers wants to see the dump file too I can let them have it, although it's 250MB in size so will need an FTP site or similar to store it.
Anyway, will see what Focusrite say and post any updates if/when they arrive.

Yes, please!!!
+1!
I bought the midnight suite a long time ago and experienced the same problem. All the updates didn't help at all. Especially the EQ seems to be pretty unstable. Inserting several instances is no problem and all of a sudden inserting another one crashes Reaper. It's not my computer, I have an i5 with 8 Gb RAM. That distracts me from using it and that's not the way it should be.
So please keep us informed. Perhaps Focusrite should get a link to this thread?

I have now reproduced this issue in-house and informed the developers and test teams of this bug and they are going to look through the crash log.
It would seem that on Windows XP, using version 1.2 from the Midnight Plugin Suite Downloads Page will avoid the crash during plugin scan, but multiple instances can cause problems. I'm sorry I can't be of more direct help in this thread for now.
I would recommend subscribing to the beta site at beta.focusrite.com in order to be informed automatically of the latest beta releases. If you have any questions or concerns, please use the Support Contact Form and we will be happy to help.

Midnight causing crash on project close/Reaper shutdown
I've been emailing with Tom from Focusrite re: the above and it's nice to see he's been following the trail on the Reaper forum too.
One thing I've not nailed-down yet, although I've made Tom aware, is that Reaper seems to crash on shutdown and/or sometimes when switching between projects since installing the Midnight suite. I will try to capture some crash info and pass-on to Tom when I have it and then update the forum too.
Hopefully Focusrite can turnaround a fix fairly quickly.

Reaper crash on shutdown/project switch with Midnight plugins
I've now reproduced the crash in Reaper when Midnight plugins are present and I either a) shutdown Reaper or b) close a project to switch to another.
Good news is that the crash is caused by the same error, according to the dump file analysis, and I've informed Tom @ Focusrite.
For now the only workaround appears to not use the plugins (1.2 or 1.4) in Reaper on Windows XP SP3, which is a shame.
Hopefully something will appear on the beta.focusrite.com site shortly to correct the issue.

I have just bought the damn plugins only to discover they constantly crash reaper too. This is highly disappointing!

Scarlett Plug-in Suite also crashes Reaper (at least Focusrite EQ).
This package:
Scarlett Plug-in Suite – EQ, compression, gating and reverb
http://uk.focusrite.com/downloads?pr...+Plug-in+Suite
We have a Scarlett 18i20 in our rehearsal place. There was a project that crashed everytime when trying to open it. I opened the project with all FXs offline, then I removed the Focusrite EQ -> no crashes anymore.
(Win8 64bit, Scarlett 18i20)

I am runnings Windows 8 x64 and the latest version of Reaper.
The plugin doesn't crash with the 1.2 version. At least, not yet.
I should be able to live with the 1.2 version since there is nothing of significant interest in the change log but this should really be fixed...especially since the crashing is obviously a regression. I have emailed Focusrite and hopefully they will take care of this.

it started to work better when I installed an older version. no crashes so far. I cannot tell what'd happen if I loaded an instance for every single track. using it on my busses hasn't caused crashes. I think I keep it like this.
my personal conclusion is: Focusrite makes great hardware but it sucks when it comes to software/plugin development.
I re-discovered where the midnight comp starts to shine: parallel compression.

Yes this problem seems restricted to Windows and Reaper.

I have been testing this problem but am having a hard time figuring it out.
I created a new VST folder and tested the plugins on their own and they work just fine. Then I started addding a bunch of other plugins until it crashed out.
At first, it seemed the GVST plugins were the culprit so I took them out and tested again. No crash.
Now I have put the GVST back in it's no longer crashing at all.
I will keep this thread updated.
