Mix Contest?
Anybody up for a mix contest? I'm about sick of trying to mix this song. I'm thinking maybe somebody else can do better. So, I'll put up the raw tracks if anybody is interested. I'll even include my lame-o mix for a guide of sorts. If a consensus comes up that a particular track(s) need to be re-recorded I will do that.
No rules, other than you can NOT add any instruments, tracks, etc. You MUST use what you are given and nothing else. I reserve the right to add or subtract rules as we go.
I'll pick what I think is the best mix and that person will get full credit on the CD as well as the website. If the person is a professional, I will put up a link to their website as well.
I'll also take votes on the best mix and the winner of THAT will have their mix appear on the CD as a 'hidden track' kind of thing.
Anybody interested?
EDIT: One thing I forgot to mention is that I have NO idea what the BPM is. Sorry!
Stems (in zip files - all exported from zero) are here:
Drums
Guitars
Vocals

Rather than PM everybody I'll just post a link to the song here.
Some info about the song:
This was started about 5 years ago. I don't get to mix everyday like a lot of you.
The drums are a stereo track. Sorry, I was unable to get the separate tracks.
SOME of the tracks have been re-recorded over the years. Mostly guitars and I think the bass was re-cut once.
EDIT: No idea what the BPM is. Sorry!
Any questions, just ask.

Up for it too. But it'll be more my take on it than for a contest.

Like your song. Downloaded the tracks and working on it. This is a hobby, so it could take a week of 15-20 minutes here and there before I submit anything.

First things first: BPM = 92.47
I used Virtual DJ Free to determine this ... just drop the mp3 into it and V-DJ calculates the BPM spot on ... so the first thing is to align the mp3 to the grid, then align all the stems to the mp3.
I like the song ... has a CSNY vibe to it, with a bit of Joe Walsh flavor thrown in for good measure ... definitely will enjoy giving this mix challenge a go! Will be my first, other than my own
These stems already sound good, so I have a question about how far to go in editing the mix ... would it be OK to cut & paste existing bits here and there within (a-la 'tape splices')? Also will try to use only Reaper FX and/or those available freely, so that the mix can be replicated by anyone with only an .rpp file.
Thanks Jeff, for this challenge .... I'm looking forward to working with your song
Cheers,
Tommy V

Yes but it is not played to a click so it fluctuates in the song.
I did align the drums and some bass and guitar parts to the grid to get a tighter sound, but I used the original performances bar lines by tempo mapping first, using 'SWS/BR: Move closest measure grid line to edit cursor', and then using dynamic split and quantize + some manual cleanup after.
Here it is so far. Having some trouble with the rhythm guitars as they don't fold well into mono.

Btw Jeffsounds are you aware of the wrong chord at the very end? It is sorta cool, but also not. I'm on the fence.

I haven't exactly set any time limit and I'm wondering if there should be one set. What do you think, guys?

Glad you like the song, Tommy. Looking forward to your mix. What are you cutting & pasting? Just curious...

I like what you've done with it, Fergler. Lots of punch and I love the bass guitar sound! Yeah, I'm aware of the bad chord. One of the big reasons I faded it at the end because at the time I wasn't sure. My initial vision was to hear the speaking voice as the song faded but then the drums came and had a definite ending so it got me thinking. That bad chord was the straw that broke the llama's back.
Can you explain what you mean by "the rhythm guitars... don't fold well into mono?"

Actually I didn't have anything particular in mind other than sometimes a note or an accent might add a bit of spice in a certain place, or maybe repeated somewhere else in the song to put in a bit of 'tension' or so before resolving into a chorus or coda or whatever. The term "Cut-n-Paste" is a salute to the He-Men-of-Yore with their razor blades and edit blocks ... I tend to think 'old-school' when creating or mixing music ...
Eeenywees, here is a preliminary .rpp mix of your song "Down The Drain" using only Reaper plugs. As a guitarist I started with some of the guitar parts and only touched the vocals in an overall manner ... but did a basic mix of drums and bass first, in order to lay down the rhythm groove.
Down The Drain_1.RPP
Hope it works ... never done this before !! LOL

Bass Track
Just started and listened to the tracks. Is the bass a bit "noisy" ?

Nope. The tracks are not included. Could you just post an MP3 or WAV?

Here's my submission: http://www.mediafire.com/listen/uz9c..._the_Drain.wav
Fergler's right about the acoustics not sitting well in mono. They really disappear. Sorry, but I didn't use them throughout. I like their light feel, but I didn't want to over use them.
I hope you find a mix you can live with from someone here. You've spent a long time working toward it.

Thanks, FS! Appreciate your efforts for sure. Interesting take on it. I kinda like the vocal FX. I never usually use much beyond verb and a bit of delay, but usually WAY in the background. As I said, interesting take.

Good song! Nothing wrong with the mix, quite the opposite... sounds radio ready to my ears. So I will, eh, ignore your kind offer... like. I'll have a listen to the other mixes later. Southern rock, right? The guitars are very good.

Bad timing for me, I'm afraid. I have a fracking record to make, starting tomorrow. It will take days...! You should do one yourself with what you've got. One song, different mixes. That's pretty cool.

These kind of mixing Contests are quite interesting.
For rookie like me there's a lot to learn from this.
I did expect some one to really take the song to the extreme though

I have to say that for the most part I like the mixes so far. Some went to a place I never would have considered and that's a GOOD thing. I really like what most have done with the bass guitar because I REALLY struggle getting a decent sound as well as getting it to sit in the mix with the clarity that I want.
More details later.

Hang on Jeff ... I ain't finished yet, got band practice and all this weekend so prolly cain't get an mp3 till Tuesday or Weds .... so far using gain automation and only JS & Reaplugs, so that I can send you an .rpp file and all you need to do is pop your stems into the project folder, Reaper will take care of the rest.
Worked on the vocals tonight and got a nice 'barbershop' thing going with the background harmonies ... worked on guitar balance also. Looking for that nasty slide sound a-la Duane Allman and/or George Harrison "How Do You Sleep" ... thought it would be fitting for the lyrical content Having some trouble with bass and drums (always do !!!) ... getting them to 'pop' as it were. Also did some accent stuff with the bass/drums via cut-n-paste in order to enhance dynamics of the song, but otherwise pretty much leaving the original arrangement intact ... hope ya don't mind.
