Default Keyboard no longer working, but only in REAPER!

Hello,

a very strange thing happened yesterday while using REAPER: keyboard completely ceased working, but only in REAPER: I could work with mouse, but all keyboard shortcuts stopped working, I couldn't even use ALT-F4 to close the application and other system shortcuts!

The keys worked anywhere else in the computer - desktop, windows, notepad and so on. I had to restart REAPER to have it work again with keyboard.

I suspect some keyboard hook used by REAPER went south...

Is this problem known?

Thanks,
Mario

yes, it happened to me, but it was user error.

It could be that you accidentally set it to send midi data instead, check your midi preferences, and if you have the virtual keyboard in use

Default keyboard suddenly not working!

I searched and found this post from Mario - the exact same thing just happened to me! Keyboard shortcuts don't work...I can double click and re-name tracks, but that's about it...spacerbar, W, CTRL+ -- nothing works!
I don't use MIDI, and as far as I can tell I have not activated the virtual keyboard.
Anybody know what happened??
Thanks
Matt

Just happened to me today 3.52p1 Lost all ability to use keyboard (spacebar, delete, etc). Never happened before. Just confirming. Fresh install of winXP, Intel machine. Was dragging and dropping items from the Media explorer as well.

Default keyboard not working

Hi,
I figured out that my new anti-virus software (Comodo) put Reaper in it's "sandbox", some isolation trick, that seemed to cut off communication with the keyboard. I set Comodo to let Reaper run outside it's sandbox, and problem solved. So look for any 'behind the scenes' things your firewall/antivirus/spam program might be doing...

No Comodo here (antivir) and no sandbox, but I'll double check it.

Thanks,
Mario

I can confirm this. No Comodo, no Sandbox. I was working on reaper and then I minimize it to my desktop to write something down in Notepad and keyboard was not working; I had to maximize and minimize Reaper to desktop to make it work again. It's happened a lot of times since last Saturday.

I think it has something to do with some changes in 3.52pre1

Just want to say, yes, this only happened since the latest pre. I have not checked it with comodo off yet. But, it happened again to me last night.

If this happens again, can you try clicking various Reaper windows to see if maybe one of the windows has grabbed the keyboard focus but isn't doing anything with the keystrokes?

Here is the undo history. You can see I used split(which was the S key) and I believe that was the last time the kb was working.. Moving media, I was moving midi item loops around in the editor, then I went in and added and deleted some hits:

Looks like its happening when i'm copying and pasting midi loops in the main window. When this happens, I lose the ability to copy and paste, even with the right click mouse option. I can hit copy, but when I go to paste, nothing happens.

EDIT: Loaded new project, threw some midi loops in the window. Hit the S key to split, worked. Then went to copy/paste ... nothing... keyboard died out after hitting S key to split midi item.

Did you try clicking in various Reaper windows (arrange view, media explorer, midi editor) and looking for any hidden modal windows (like an error or information message)?

seems to be linked to using the alt key.. even with a blank empty project. like Using alt + b to split or so.. I then noticed that ALT key is turning on the little line underneath the names like file, edit, etc at the top bar:

The bottom pic is what happens when i press the alt key.

I bet this solves junioreq's problem, but not mine - I have the option disabled.

Thanks,
Mario

Nope, the application is completely paralyzed and no editing can be done.

Insert media item. Push spacebar, it works.

Alt B to split, Alt+scrollwheel to zoom.

DEAD. No keyboard input at all.. Only thing that cures is a restart of reaper.

This was done with a new project. just dragging up a media file.

~Rob.

Application is unusable

Set to ignore alt.. sorry forgot to mention that. I can also reproduce it with those steps 100% of the time.

Whay you re describing sounds exactly like the behavior that occurs when "prevent ALT key from focusing main menu" is disabled, but you say it is checked, so it's a mystery.

What Reaper windows are showing in this new project? Maybe there is some issue with how a particular Reaper dialog or docked window is handling the alt key.

Can you post your REAPER.ini and reaper-kb.ini here?

Default Keyboard Not Working

I know this is an old thread but just in case anyone else is having the same problem....

For me this problem was being caused by having the render queue window open on another screen. Once closed the keyboard started working again.
