iPad alternative to REAPER
I haul my laptop with me when I travel in case I have an opportunity to shoot a "Look At Me Play Guitar" video. I use Edius as my NLE and of course REAPER as my DAW. If I could accomplish my normal video editing functions in LumaFusion I would still need a pretty decent audio tool in case audio problems arose beyond the capabilities of LumaFusion.
Anyone have a suggestion for an iPad DAW that's remotely as capable and useable as REAPER?
Thanks,
Fran

I suppose in the foreseeable future Apple will provide iPad thingies with M1 CPU and a common OS for all their devices.
Hence as a developer I would stop working on stuff for iOS.

There’s a bunch nowadays but beware that many are focused on creating music or beats in novel ways that work on a pad. Maybe not what you want. Caveat emptor and all that.

I suppose my initial reaction was "Why?" Mastering another DAW seems like quite a trauma for occasional use.
Have you thought about Microsoft Surface? Several of them won't upgrade to windows 11 so I suspect will be sold at a reduced price on ebay. They're still pretty expensive, but are pretty good tech wise. And Reaper.

Yeah, that is a solution one might like.
I went down this path a few years ago and it was not for me. I felt the Surface Pro lacked the simplicity of an iPad without the perks of a proper laptop. It felt a bit in between to be honest. It got hot, had low battery stamina and I really needed an external interface and a mouse to make it work properly which kind of undid the whole mobile angle. Bitwig faired a bit better with the pen IIRC.
But YMMV. This could be the perfect solution for someone.

It is. I've had some issues getting into it because of some annoying training wheels like the weird full screen where you pick sounds or its odd way of limiting the project length. But maybe I should give it another go. Guess it's killer on an iPhone.
It's also frre to try so...

From where I'm sitting it actually looks like the opposite direction is more likely. IOS gives Apple more depth of control over the development direction and they seem to relish that. The latest iPad Air is M1 already.

Yeah, I don't do beats or loops or layers or anything in that corner of the universe. Live acoustic guitar, solo or duo, preferably miked but DI-ed if the environment is noisy. And as you say, most of the apps I saw were beats-oriented and useless to me.

I use about 1% of REAPER functionality and I'm fine with that. If I can learn to pull in a file, tweak levels, maybe a touch of EQ and echo and/or reverb I'm done. Ideally the tool would handle 32 bit float because I"m hooked on my Zoom F6, but I guess I could remember how to set levels (grin). The IOS universe is getting pretty functional for what I do - I started with three mirrorless cameras and now I'm using two phones and one camera. I expect to go to three phones this fall which will really lighten my load. And an iPad Air instead of a lappie would do even more. And LumaFusion looks very compelling compared to Windows NLE options.

I think I'll start there even if I wind up somewhere else.

Interesting point !
Of course the M1 series provides the necessary power to allow Apple for using just the OS they like.
Maybe you are right that they might drop the BSD UNIX based MAC OS in favor of something else for their common single OS. But I doubt that it will (technically) be iOS due to limitations of same. (I don't see iOS in a high performance server...)

I'd steer clear of Auria Pro - for a long time it was the leader but it seems to be practically abandonware at this point, receiving very few updates in the past couple of years. Cubasis looks like the best choice (apart from GarageBand if it'll meet your needs).
FYI, Ripple Training just released an in-depth tutorial on LumaFusion that would be worth buying if you want to learn it. Their tutorials are fantastic and well worth the modest price.
I spent a long time debating whether to go iPad or laptop for travel but ultimately decided to stick with laptop: a MacBook Air isn't all that much more heavy/bulky than an iPad with external keyboard and then you can use all the software you're used to using instead of having to learn new apps.

Thanks for the tip on Auria.
I'm a Windows person and one of the reasons I'm looking around is the sad state of my beloved Edius NLE for Windows. LumaFusion seems to have the features I need and stability I want. If I switch my NLE to Resolve I'll need a lot more horsepower in my laptop which I would expect to mean more bulk/weight.

The technically best move would be swapping BSD Unix for Linux and with that allowing to use a real time Kernel if desired and a standard efficiency optimized Kernel else.
But this is Apple after all ...

I just downloaded garageband on my ipad air 2 & it is both free and quick to get up & running.
I do have a suspicion it will be a bit limiting for composing stuff though...

I think you're taking a good approach. Lumafusion has come a long way in a short time, as have the iPad and iOS. They'll both only get better and more powerful, and it's a cheaper and more portable solution than a laptop capable of editing/grading video. There's a guy named Greg Simmons who has been doing short documentary-style music videos of traditional singers and musicians in Southeast Asia using a small Sony camera, a Nagra recorder, and Lumafusion on an iPad, and he loves the setup.
My own video projects typically take years to complete (I've been working on a documentary for the past 6 years and have at least another 3-4 years to go) and I prioritize image and sound quality over speed/efficiency, so I'm using Resolve on a desktop and two monitors (one of which is a reference monitor for color grading). But it would be so liberating to be able to do everything on an iPad for smaller projects where speed and efficiency are the priorities.

OK, I'm impressed with the performance of the Air 5 and with the resources LumaTouch has for tutorials and such. I can tell that it's going to take some effort to get myself off the familiar even with the benefits of the new approach, but I'll probably feel a lot better when the next Edius upgrade comes out and I don't feel compelled to buy it.

Just happened across this old thread and thought I'd share MTS:
https://www.multitrackstudio.com/ipad.php
I chose it for it's handling of time signature changes, many other iPad apps are very restrictive but MTS allows me to chop and change every bar if I so choose, and sometimes I do.
Good use of screen space and integrates well with the outside world, very Reaper like in that respect.
Also a big fan of Lumafusion on iPad.

Cubasis v3.5 working really well here on my iPad.
Get Cubasis LE and a supported device then just do the in app upgrade it’s a lot cheaper.
Garage band has some great instruments especially the drummer ,so I use that as well but export the audio out and then import into Cubasis when I have a part I like .
