do I have to?
I need a powersupply for my presonus HP4 headphone amp. I found it here:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc..._External.html
do I have to spend $20 on a freakin wall wart? seems ridiculous.
maybe this would work?
http://goo.gl/0zoS0
the specs on the one I need are:
input: 120VAC
output: 16VAC
Amps: 1000ma
HZ: 60
Watts: 23
I can find a cheap power supply that fits all of those except watts I found one with 16 watts, not 23. is there any wiggle room with any of those specs, do you think?
I've tried mouser and allied, I can't remember the name of the other big electronic supply company... anyone know?

No,you don't have to.$20 for a wall wart is stupid. What you do have to do is make certain that the connector is correct.A little DIY may be called for,but you do do DIY,don't you?
There is some wiggle room-Don't go up or down in voltage. You can go up in amperage, but don't go down.
The one you linked to at mouser is a .25 amp supply. You need 1 amp,or 1000MA.
Have you looked at AXMAN?
The other big one is Digikey.

Why yes, I do do DIY.
I can find all the specs in tact, but not watts. the closest ps I can find, the watts are ringing in at 16 and not 23. rest of the specs are identical. it's this one:
http://www.alliedelec.com/search/pro...x?SKU=70218015
watts up with watts? is 16 ok?

For a supply to deliver 16v at 23 watts it would have to be rated at 1.47ish amps.
If your headphone amp calls for 16v at 1amp then the supply you found should do the job.
I just looked at my Behringer headphone amp's supply,it's 9v at 500ma.They are similar devices-I'm going to guess that Presonus is using the higher voltage and amperage supply to gain clean headroom. You will have a little wiggle room.

just because I know nothing about this stuff... (i just follow instructions when I DIY).
the specs of this one I found are:
16VAC
1 amp
16 watts
see chart:
are you saying that 1 amp at 16 watts in a device that wants 23 watts will yield 1.47ish amps? or are you saying that I need the specs to be 1.47ish from the get go?

I am saying that for the power supply itself to deliver 16v at 23 watts it needs to be rated at 1.47 amps.
Where is the 23 watts figure coming from exactly?

I just took a gander at the BH photo page again. The supply they are selling is for every Presonus 1/2 and 1/3 rackspace product. It will be very conservatively rated. It provides enough juice for the most demanding stuff in that range.

Can't argue with that! But that supply also needs to power this preamp with phantom power, analog meters and tube filaments to light up.
Your little amplifier requires a lot less power.(I don't mean to belittle your amplifier )

But before you do that wander the aisles at Axman. It's worth a look, and if they have what you need it'll be pennies on the dollar. Also there's AEI in St.Louis Park.I would call AEI before I set out, though.

yeah, I'll hit up the axeman. 16vac seems like a weird voltage, but maybe 12 would work? 12 is much more common.

I bet it would. You wouldn't fry anything by trying. You will lose a little headroom, though.Probably not enough to notice in most situations.Just don't go OVER 16v.
