Default [solved] MIDI recording extends item, when cursor not before item

Hey there,

sorry for the weird title, but I did not know how to make it more clear in less words. So my problem is this:

I want to use "overdub" for MIDI recording. And I would like the recording to behave like the first recording you can see in the GIF. When the cursor is before the existing MIDI item, new recording will be 1. put into the existing MIDI item and 2. everything new will be put into a new MIDI item.

Unluckily: when the cursors is at the beginning or in the existing MIDI item, the item will be extended.

Did I miss something or is the workflow I'd like to have not possible?

Thanks for all your help!

Well I found out how this can be achieved:

in the item properties loop source has to be enabled. In that case, when starting the recording, while the cursor is in the media item already, the recording behavioour will be that new notes will be put into THIS media item, but notes after the end of the media item will be put into a newly created one after that!

Hehe, yeah, who knows. I am rather new to Reaper, after all.

I think in this specific case it might be even logical, since: a loopable item there is no "need" for it to be extended, since it's meant to be looped. This might be the reason for this behaviour.
