Default REAPER Pi

Got a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ as a gift and finally tried it out. I just loaded REAPER for Linux armv7l and initially no selection for audio worked. Then I thought WTF and installed jack. The next time I launched REAPER I selected jack audio and it worked.

So the next test I decided to try was to import a song into the Pi and see what it would do. To my surprise, it was able to play eight tracks of audio with multiple FX on every track without issue.

This is a screen capture of REAPER playing a test song on a Raspberry Pi.

Hooked up this tiny touchscreen gift and had REAPER playing the project in my hand.

I was mirroring my 1080p monitor on the little 2.8" touchscreen but was still able to grab and move faders with my finger. To really use the little touchscreen effectively it would need to be running something like 640x480 or 800x600 so the controls are larger and easier to grab and move. Anyway, I'm quite impressed to see REAPER running so well on a device that's smaller than a pack of cigarettes.

after I saw the old Jesusonic box years ago, I've always thought it would be a riot to gut an old cassette 4 or 8 track, install a single board computer of some type, and have myself little portable reaper box. I'm not clever enough to convert the analog controls on an old 4 track to work as encoders, but how cool would that be?

You could gut a cheap game controller and rig up some of it's switches below the gutted tape deck transport buttons, then bind them in REAPER. Pretty easy to pull that off, but beyond simple transport stuff, it would get more expensive and involved pretty quick.

Awesome stuff. I've been turning this idea over as a VST host for a piano for use in conjunction with a keyboard controller. It's bizarrely hard to find a little "MIDI-in-audio-out piano in a box" product. There are super crappy (not-really-)cheap options and exorbitantly expensive options. Seems like one could DIY a Pi with a free piano sampler on it pretty easily.

Also, You know about the web interface? Could occasionally be a good option for that little screen.

I'll have to cable up my Akai MPD26 pad controller to it, and see if I can get it seeing the midi. If that works I may have to pop for some cheep low latency 2 channel USB audio interface to experiment with.

I had that all setup in Windows but haven't gotten around to setting up the web interface in Linux yet. WOW, I see Favio added metering to his interface. That is too cool, even though it's not really something I would remotely need, pun intended.
