Linux MOTU 24ao class compliant

Trying to get my 24ao installed on linux mint... gulp.

The device shows up in in the mixer settings under 'configuration'. I set the profile from 'off' to 'multichannel'. I don't see any inputs show up in the recording or playback tabs in that mixer.

In Reaper, I've tried the device on ALSA, Jack and PulseAudio. Alsa seems to freeze the computer.

I'm looking to use 28 channels 24analog and 24spdif. I've read Linux is sensitive to hitting the number of available channels on the nose -- else disaster.

Is there a CLI command to check the number of channels? Any recommendations?

PulseAudio output:
no error, but hardware outs only show two outputs -- settings were set to 24 and 48 to test

ALSA output:
