Default OCTAVE - Open Community Theme

As the title says, this is the start of an Open Community Theme.

Everyone is welcomed to join and give feedback or help in any way they can.

Let's try and keep this thread civilized, also this is not a WALTER feature request thread
(though I guess some will be mentioned from time to time)
Please bring constructive criticism, and elaborate when you don't like something.

This is very much a WIP

The name is 'OCTAVE' for now, though it might change in the future.

Let me be the first to say that I welcome your input. As many have said (including myself) your earlier mockup was just stunning. From what I can see, you're VERY skilled in the art of design.

Having said that, I'm worthless as assistant other than to share my comments on a design. But I do look forward to how this thread will play out.

Me too not much use except for testing.

Are you sure it's worth starting the theme now though as so many walter things might change?

I say that with no idea of how much though and it may not be much change so why not

be great to see your original theme started and who knows, by the end of 4 alpha we might see multiple docs which would help with the bits of your theme walter can't yet do

the problem is... Reaper is not yet up to par with our wishes and imaginations

It's not yet possible to create a UI similar to that in Brice's mockup. And it's the functionality in that mockup I am wanting more, rather than the general look and feel.

But we can make "pre-theme" as close as possible to that mockup, and maybe some day it works and looks just like we want.

Brice, I would prefer it to be open project. Life is all about learning anyway.

I'd certainly cheer you on, and perhaps contribute the odd element here or there if it's good enough.

WALTER hacking certainly sounds like fun when not done alone . Where do you want to start ?

Wooooooooooooooow!!!

Mr Brice in tha house back? This is like a dream come true already. Hope I could help but I will be number 1 supporter with feedbacks. I think Cockos should try to work & put Mr W.Tie together with Brice and work something out about the new upcoming mock up to be brought to V4 and that is for sure would be a KILLER blend.

May this become TRUE

Im curious to know which parts of Brice's mockup cannot be done with walter?

Surely it could be done somehow?

Careful now, you don't want to make it look TOO good. I would definitely offer my commentary. Not sure if my graphics skills are as polished or diverse as some of the best ie. WT, Dr. Suess, etc. I'm good with logos, marketing/advertising, stuff like that.

But I'm here. And here: http://www.realitycheckers.com/

Thank you for the positive feedback.

Aeolian :
I'm 'sure' it'll be possible at some point, but for now WALTER doesn't cover all my mock-up's needs.

Solar :
I think WT has his own team, so he's got what he needs to provide a great default theme, and above all he's asking for users feedback.

airon :
I think we first need to decide on elements placement.
Maybe we can start with the MCP, then move to the TCP.
Decide which elements need to be shown, the various layouts needed...

The idea is to make a truly complete theme, that can evolve quickly as 'hopefully' elements are added to WALTER's realm of possibilities.

I hear you on this Brice. Then we're behind you here... let's the magic begin and I wish some very good talented guys here will support you.
Also i liike your idea of making a Complete Theme that will open with the evolution of WALTER

Cheers!!

Well, off we go then.

There have been discussions about the switching of layouts being easier to do, with a double-click on one area for example to switch between two preconfigured layouts, or a button that also carries all layouts for that area in its context menu, which would be a lot faster than the submenu structure we have at the moment. Thus, we shouldn't be afraid to design different layouts for different tasks in the same area.

Description Proposal

0.Area

0.0.Job to be performed in that area (overall context)

0.0.0.All Layouts for that job
Here's my first :

1.The MCP - Contexts

1.1.Mixing, the most obvious one

The button placement in the default theme is actually quite good for those controls that you access less often. If you're emphasizing the faders and meters it makes for a very clean mixer strip that's also quite narrow. If possible, we should try to do it this way as often as we can, unless we think of something better.

1.1.1.Hands On Access to plugins, sends and parameter knobs. Automation controls not emphasized for users who use control surfaces very little. Fader is of normal size, as are the pan control.

1.1.2.Hands On Access to plugins, sends and parameter knobs. Automation controls ARE emphasized for people with control surfaces. Fader is less emphasized, pan controls are normal(they're small anyway).

1.1.3.Project overview. Probably an MCP that's narrow but still has all the elements. Dev note: It's a shame we can't use knobs for the pans, as sideway sliders won't work so well on narrow strips.

1.1.4..... ?

We could use Inkscape for mockup layouts with the elements we make(and Brice probably draws ), but of course WALTER code is always a good thing to have as well.

Shall we agree on a name for the theme and image directory ?

i just want to hibernate for 6 months and the wake up and see where everything is at...

I mean - I'd love to help in any way I can!
WALTER is really stabbing me in the brain atm, but I'm really good at mockups and generating ideas. I'm not too shabby with the photoshop either.

volume knobs in the tcp would be so so so so sooooo great! I want to make the tcp able to be very small but still have basic functionality.

EG:
I mean look at that thing. it would be even smaller without the icon and it lets me:
change volume
select input
arm
select input mode
mute
solo
switch between mono/stereo (which would be a free slot in reaper)

if we could get a collapsible per-track io/fx sidebar in the mixer... I'd be wild-eyed.

@Pixeltarian, that S1 screenshot would be very simple to do with Walter. I'm rubbish with photoshop, but if you wanted to post the pngs I could try and Walter them for you

Could I ask a favour? Could someone please provide a link to the mockup everybody is referring to?

I'm working on a REALLY slow internet connection and taken an age to search thru posts to find it.

Would love to see it.

Also would be very interested in helping with this community effort, although I'd only be able to test, not design...

Let's call this theme "Community" !

Maybe we should list what's missing in WALTER to get close to Brice UI then generate precise FR so Cockos can clearly take position and maybe tell us "this will be possible" or "guys, stop dreaming on that one".

In other words we need to document "What we want to achieve" then "What's missing".

Extending WALTER to pretty much every graphical element in Reaper, not just TCP, MCP, transport, and what else is there...

knob knob knob nom nom nom...

I just would rather not display the numerical values for smallness sake, but would probably want to have this nice big version when the tcp is big, and then do smaller when there's not enough room

another idea i had was something that functions like a knob, but is not quite a knob. just a box with numbers in it. you drag up and down over the box to change the value. something like this would be possible with walter (besides the cool color representation of '+' and '-' of course):

since reaper is all about acronyms

how about
OCT/W

Which we could read as OCTAV

This is great and space-conserving, but I would definitely like to see the +/- shown, ALONG with different colored frame. Just for clarity.

boo! I was hoping you wouldn't say that. it's just too much. and you know... a lot of daws don't show it numerical values in the tcp at all... I'm just sayin...

*edit* I have a solution. mockup to follow
*edit again*
ok this is a super ugly execution of the idea, but something like this:

Sorry, I'm coming from synthesizer background where the sign of parameters is absolutely needed and obligatory. Besides, look at NI Massive or Absynth, the same way of working - draggable numeric fields, and yes, they show signs too...

EDIT: hahah, now it's even funnier! (sorry for being honest ^^')
