Default Amp Sim -vs- The Real Thing: Can U Tell?

Buddy of mine forwarded me a copy of Guitar Squid's newsletter.
Found this link:

The contest is over, and the results are in, but you can still take the quiz. Very interesting. Very.
I did a quick search of the forums. I don't think this has been posted before. If I'm wrong apologies.

Pretty cool! What you can pull off with amp sims now is crazy. If you put them in a full mix and process them it is even more difficult to tell the difference if done right.

i note that the only ones who got a perfect score could only note the difference, not from the TONE but from the other imperfect characteristics of the amp - the self-noise, room noise, etc...

the actual tone is imperceptible nowadays(by 99 percent of people - thats a REAL stat. lol) .

@ Jason: My thoughts exactly. It wasn't the *tone* that helped the guys who got A+ -it was the amp noise! I've been a fan of blind testing since reading through this post:

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/high-...back-test.html

Granted, the Guitar Squid quiz doesn't seem to qualify as a true abx blind test (at least as my blasted out brain understands it....), but the general concept of using one's ears to make audio judgements, versus hyped up psyche is a point well made. Having said that, I got a little 15W tube amp the other day and there's nothing like turning knobs and flicking switches to get that lucious "amp sim" tone (wink wink)
