Default effects always on.+ Hiss

Hi, every time I record something voice, guitar or whatever, it always plays back with reverb on. How do I switch it off?
Also I am getting very loud background hiss on everything I record..how can I sort this.

Any chance it is accidentally recording through the laptop mic and not the Scarlett mic? I see this happen a lot on laptops.

OK, do you by chance have it where you are monitoring through reaper and through the sound card directly at the same time? If the latency is low enough this may sound like cheap reverb, if high enough it will sound like a delay or double sound.

I'm not sure! I'm monitoring through headphones directly in to the sound card...

See if you turned on the input monitoring on, on the track in reaper. If that fella is on and you are monitoring from the sound card you'll get two signals with one of them slightly later than the other.
