Advanced UI
Hi, I'm new to Reaper
but here are a few things I thought would be nice to add to Reaper :
- more docks (ie one on the left)
- different dock behavior, docks can be locked open or collapsed and popup onmouseover, then collapse automaticaly when you leave the dock region (like adobe photoshop lightroom)
- ability to dock within the dock, so the bottom dock could be split in 2 (like smartftp or adobe after effects)
- simple fx browser with filter in the left dock
- multiple Mixer setups, and the ability to quickly switch between one another
- show fx/receives/sends in the mixer
here's a quick and early mockup (borrowed Mykatik's 'Mark One' theme

brice, welcome to REAPER!
comments... I guess my main comment is that it still surprises me when a first post of a new forum member actually consists of a list of things that should or could be added to REAPER.
and yes I as well like the vertical menu/browser that I remember so well from Cool Edit and find in XT2 for example. Don't miss that however in REAPER - but it wouldn't surprise me if some your proposals are already planned for a future REAPER update, maybe in v 2.x series. The whole app seems to be heading for total versatility and flexibility anyway...

Great ideas here:
many docked windows, docking in the Arrange !
I would add to this:
1) item/track properties linked to selection and docked or floating, without the "ok/cancel" button,
2) with a smaller interface (like in the Logic items), where you can drag any digit (+modifier for a finer resolution).

here's a first stab at making the 'media item properties' dockable
didn't change it much compared to the original
- could add a 'lock' so that it wouldn't automatically switch when selecting another item
- could make it slimmer with only one item per row if it's docked in the 'left-side' dock

I spent the first six months or so accidentally hitting ESC to close the Item Props window thinking it would just close the window (and save the changes) like all the other windows.. so anything that makes that window behave more like the others (eg stay open, be dockable) is a +1 idea for me!

I'm not sure if the development tool kit used for Reaper allows for that sort of stuff. I see the same problems that the Samplitude Dev team faced happening here all over again. For instance the bottom zoom handles are dragable - the vertical not. That was later 'fixed' in Sam but as yet not in Reaper.
If you compare an app like DVDLab you'll see a very different and much more flexible native layout. It does most of the things that get requested here by default.
But - I'm no programmer - its probably as difficult porting to a different SDK as it is porting to MAC - Justin?

with reaper v2 beta out the door, it's time for an upgraded mockup of wanted new features.
- vertical zoom centered on mouse cursor
- resizable fx insert & sends zone in the mixer
- receives also available in the mixer view
- collapsable/lockable sidebar
- collapse/lock switch for the main docker
- choice between tabs at bottom or top of pannels
- skinnable tabs
- slim tracks in the mixer
- collapse folder tracks in the mixer
- multiple mixer views
- ability to split the docker
- different fader image for the master track
- context relative toolbar
- metronome next to the BPM in the transport
- everything dockable, no more flying windows (item properties, projects settings)
Updated mockup (still very wip)

Very good ideas, it would lessen the amount of popups, which would be nice especially on larger displays, because everything could be seen easily at the same time.

The Ultimate Track Inspector
What? No track inspector...

Could you visualize that?

General Contact Unit : I don't really understand your track inspector concept.
Also I saw your 'related' thread about smart auto resize on hover. I don't really like that idea much, it'd get in the way too much.
To get from one panel to another, you'd hover some other panel in the way that'd automatically zoom/expand which you don't need and then your real target would be even further away from your mouse cursor. I'm all for dockers which auto popup which don't resize other panels when you hover the side (left/right/bottom) and if you decide to lock them open, then and only then would it resize other panels.
(sorry this is not an easy read)

as neat as this looks, i seriously hope like hell it doesn't go ahead. i got into reaper beacause it is simple and lightweight. call me oldschool. hell, i still use the classic theme.
more suggestions like this and i might as well just stay with cubase.

Brice!
this is very, very nice!
those bars that allow a part of the screen to (dis)appear, just like we see in Dreamweaver. That's exactly what a Swiss army knife like Reaper needs.

I agree...it goes right along with what I and others have been requesting regarding left-margin P-tools style track management toggled with inspector-type functionality. Well done!

hide the dockers you don't want to use no?

In short it's simply "always see everything (or a few tracks at least) related and connected to the current track" so, with high probability, everything you need is within one or two clicks at most even if you have a humongous mixer. Does that help?
A mixer is used as an inspector here
http://www.cockos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12504
I'd just like to hide Master and see another mixer panel populated with tracks related to the current track.

glad I convinced some of you guys, I only wish I could convince Justin and Christophe.
General Contact Unit : ok, I now 'understand' your request, I'll try and see what ideas I can come up with.
echosystm : sorry, I do think using a daw requires some knowledge, and seriously I'm all for making the UI simple and convenient, mostly by it not getting in the way.
I'll try and read other feature requests from the forum and see if I can put some more clever thinking and fit them into this ui mockup.

I suddenly realize that the tabs are much like those by Adobe (in Audition and I guess other apps as well). My criticism to the developers then was that I think the tabs consume too much pixel space) Especially the vertical space is much needed so a design much take care of that. Is it possible for you to make tabs to the left of the mixer/fx/media/etc area?
Secondly, I understand that working out this interface layout depends very much on the elementary coding of Reaper. It's not just a matter of a new skin. But I am curious: is there already a skin which you have based this on?
---------------
Sorry, you already mentioned that: Mykatik's Mark One. But comparing that one to yours I think I see that you use a lighter grey.. Is that correct?
---------------
Brice, PLEASE: work out your mock ups into a real skin for R2.
