Default Can I use channel inserts for mix-bus compressor?

I have a UMC404HD with 4 channel inserts. I don't have a hardware compressor yet. I would like to get one for final master compression glue.

You sure can, most easily done by working on a finished stereo render as its own track

Another question.

I'm thinking about upgrading to an RME UC in s year or so.

Do the input output trs jacks do the same thing as inserts but just split the signal or is entirely different? How would I hook it up to a stereo compressor for glue mix compression?

RME:

No, they're not inserts. The outputs are outputs and the inputs are inputs. They are balanced, hence the TRS jacks.
You would set two outputs to send to the inputs of the compressor & two outs of the compressor would come back to a pair of inputs on the interface.

Instead of 2 x Y cables (tip sleeve) I'll be using 4 x TRS cables, right? Then I can use ReaInsert and use the compressor just like another FX?

Naw dude. Those holes are between the main inputs and the ADC. They're meant for if this is your only preamp, but you want to patch in a hardware compressor as you're recording. You can't access the Send part of that jack from anywhere but the inputs of the device. It is not a valid output to select from Reaper or anywhere else on your computer.

You CAN use the Return part as an input if you want to bypass the preamp, but for use as a "master bus compressor" from Reaper, you're still going to have to use the actual 3/4 outputs.

I REALLY don't know why the hell you'd do such a thing nowadays, but if you must, probably use ReaInsert, and (hopefully obviously) you won't be able to do offline renders.

Playback output 3 and 4 into the compressor and then into the inserts or into the front preamp inputs?

It's better to find an interface with outputs and inputs rather than inserts if my main goal is to compress the master bus?

This is true, unless you've got an extrordanarily good hardware compressor (read expensive), you're unlikely to get
anything better then a virtual comprssor.

Not to mention the interface itself! Unless you're looking for noise and distortion, but we can do those things ITB too.

For the experience.

Currently saving up for an RME UC and an SSL clone.

And it's fun. There's really no point in life but to have fun and sharing that with people.
