Default Guitar plugins? Hunt no more!

Since starting with Reaper I've been always hunting for guitar plugins. An endless search in a rabbit hole, it seems.

But, paradoxically, I've found some right were I stand - already in Reaper! Built in!

After watching this video by Kenny Gioia/Reaper Mania: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eakdyc6vE-Y

He demonstrates how to use JS Distortion and JS Amp Convolver in combination and it sounds great! Easy to use, always compatible, very small CPU usage and lots of possibilities.

I guess the trick, as he shows, is to making the combo work by setting the levels between them. And from there variations are plenty.

Problems with third party guitar plugins can often be; way too much cpu usage, compatibility problems with both sound and GUI. Need to reinstall after upgrades to your system and/or Reaper.

So, try the JS guitar plugins! There always there, no matter what!

Nice one! I always like Gioia's videos and it's great to be reminded of how good the JS stuff is sometimes.

I have a lot of amp sims and cab impulses, paid or otherwise, but honestly with the JS stuff and Guitarix you have everything covered I reckon. I sometimes use an Airwindows one too (GrindAmp for example) but otherwise it's the JS fuzz or distortion -> JS amp cab sim or a few Guitarix LV2s stacked and that's that.

For me it ended with Helix Native. I'm set for life.

I use Tukan's Guitar Amp all the time. It is my go to amp sim. Sometimes I turn off the cab sim and use Reaverb to load an Ownhammer cab sim, which makes it even more versatile. The rest of his stuff is amazing too, and all free.

I love using JS plugins for Guitar! I have a saved fx chain that I can throw on a track and I can instantly get to work. For tone shaping, the 4x4 EQ is also pretty interesting between the distortion and the amp sim and I usually add a readelay and a reaverbate after the amp sim to give an 'amp in the room' feel. Also I can't recommend the Infernal Diseased Dire Rat JSFX enough, it's based on the ProCo RAT distortion pedal but much more versatile. https://forums.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=136379
P.S. Airwindows Guitar Conditioner at the beginning of the chain brightens up the tone nicely.

Thanks for the tips about Infernal Diseased Dire Rat JSFX and Airwindows! Airwindows all plugins are overwhelming, so I created a new directory called .airwindow and added this path to Reaper. I then chose some few of all the Airwindows plugs that seemed nice for guitar. Among all the plugs in the original archive there's a file "what.txt" that lists the plugs and what they do.

Always nice to test new plugins and have alternatives. For me, new sounds can start the creative process and lead to new music. On the other hand, sometimes it's easy to get caught in the rabbit hole of the technology and installing/testing all day.

This is another good option, this is an older version of Tonelib GFX but works great and has a Linux native version.

Besides Neural DSP I've been using Airwindows Fireamp, Midamp, Lilamp and Bassamp (with Bass drive) and I've honestly have been able to tweak very nice tones out of them, despite looking very barebone and well.. they're free.

This one is the competition to Neural Amp.

I really like the Epoch Amp, really nice sounding guitar amp. You'll need a cab IR right after it.

Just look at this thread and how many options we have. Glorious stuff comrades.

Also CAPS AmpVTS (I think that's what it's called?) is worth a look. The Cabinet III and IV plugs also. Can get some really nice tones although I'm yet to get any good high-gain sounds from it. Probably just needs a decent distortion or drive stompbox in front of it I think.

Woah! Some serious tones here! And tons to choose from, their Proteus has a ton of captures in their Tone Library, from full on metal to the clean Ethos overdrive.

I never touch anything from Line6 again, ever.

I once had a big Spider amp... and later for my computer I had a Pocket Pod to simulate FX... both products sounded like plastic!

Another product I was very very happy about, to record on computer, was Vandal amp:
https://www.magix.com/int/music/vandal/

But it's not working under Linux, alas, only windows.... not even via Wine.
I could install it again (since I have a working windows on another computer on a dual boot), but since everything is working seemlessly under Linux, I haven't touched Windows in the past 9 years...

And last weekend, I tested Guitarix.VST it's wonderful! Sound is really great and non-destructive.
Wished it was already there 10 years ago before the endless quest for my sound recording setup !!!
Still have to learn to work with it, it looks a bit overwhelming first, but there are lots of presets available to get you started. (the updated version has acces to lots of online shared presets)
Will test these first as a base to tweak from.

Another good alternative, (hardware), is Mod Duo from ModDevices, which runs a linux computer inside, to create pedalboards. But I think Guitarix will make my Mod Duo unnecessary.

I agree. I didn't have a huge problem with the sound of the old Line 6 (not amazing but workable), but I don't like their way of doing business. If you need any support (or even useage for that matter) out of any legacy product, good luck! I bought the TonePort / Gearbox Plugin when it was new and apparently it phones home for registration each use. At some point they shut down the phone home server and now it's useless (the plugin). Nice paying for something you expect to be yours for life and then have them shut down the availability of the server making it useless. At least they could make it possible to use it without the server so it'd still be useable. I asked them about this and they basically said tough luck! No more Line 6 for me. Bad company in my opinion. Plenty of other great options anyway.

I just installed ToneLib and it's great! Uses IRs unlike the old line 6 stuff.
