Default My 4th placed entry to Rekkerd.org Remix Comp 2013

Hi,

Here's a link to a rework of my entry to the Rekkerd.org remix contest 2013 which got 4th place and I won Ivory II Grannd Pianos software (nice piano vst's_)

https://soundcloud.com/doctorbob/wel...er-rekkerd-org

The whole thing was made from 3 very short samples. Samplomatic did the magic, lots of careful processing etc etc.

The whole tune and backing (and solo!), was all algorithmically generated.

So, machines all the way. Mixed etc in REAPER (of course).

The original entry is on my soundcloud account, so once you hear this one, you can have a listen to the submitted tune.

Also, various other reaper things - do have a look around.

How exactly does that work? (I am curious about the algorithmic part.)

You say it was all done with Samplomatic. Are you talking about ReaSamplOmatic5000, in Reaper?

Yup, just 3 samples ...

If you check your rekkerd samples ...

"Donk rattle" made the "drums and tambourine" stuff

"Harped" did all the various "guitar/piano" backings

"Sandy Meh" turned into the screaming lead guitar!

A wee mp3 of the 3 samples here: ... https://soundcloud.com/doctorbob/rek...es-used-in-the

I hate to admit it, but this time I used Band in a Box, but worked very hard with the chord sequences (using the Melodist function), how the harmonies worked, and then "guided" the soloist part to make a good solo!

Yes, yes, yes, ReaSamplOmatic5000 did all the instrument production. Then all driven by midi, plenty of eq biz, compressions, some Waves GTR stuff to do some cabinet and stomp stuff, the lead track was also copied to another track without the GTR stuff, and put into a delay vst with feedback (it's there if you listen, subtle, but helps). All glued with Valhalla Room, and then in the final chain was eq, comp and limit.

Samples here in a wee mp3 ... https://soundcloud.com/doctorbob/rek...es-used-in-the

But, basically, it was all machine generated with me just guiding it a bit!

Glad you liked it.

Really cool.

I am still not sure I understand how the algorithmic parts were generated. Let me just read through your answer a few times.

The melody was auto generated by the Melodist function in BIAB.

I then applied various harmonies to it (via BIAB!).

Then I used the Soloist function to generate an "appropriate" solo and applied a harmony function to that as well on a separate track.

So, BIAB generated a drum track, a bass track which I discarded, a melody track and 3 harmony tracks, then a solo track and a single harmony for that.

Very bland sounding as a general midi track (!!!!), but apply the samples from the comp (we had 115 samples we could use, but ONLY them!), abd then a lot of careful processing, and you hear the result!

Again, ALL machine ...

Cheers,

db

PS .. do listen to the 3 samples in the small mp3 ... you'll be amazed!

Thanks dea-man!

Please do have a listen to my other bits and pieces on soundcloud - quite a variety, most done with REAPER.

The 2 old ACID-2 pieces from back in 2002! One was a submission to an SOS competition -JazzDance - didn't get placed there! Boo hoo!)

The blues number, flute and 2 sax pieces were recorded 14 years ago on my old Tascan 244 - all transistor portastudio!

Hi, been listening ...

"The way you play" ... nice laid back song - personally I would have the drums just a little further back in the mix without quite so much attack - but, just my own preferences ...

"Paradise lost" ... another nice song, good vocals - *a bit like the mix characteristics of my recording "Beyond the Sea" (did you like that one??) I know you say this is your master, have you thought of widening the backing a little? Again, just a personal observation ...

Your last 2 tracks are interesting! Streets, nice laid back and then builds very well - some jazz flute might be nice in there perhaps??? - then the "Adventures ..", love the additions!

Hope this makes some sense ... I like what I hear, bust as usual with all tracks by anyone - we all have our own take on subtle changes etc ... not criticism at all, just a point of view.

I could give some of the tracks a go a my mix take if you wish?? PM me and I can sort out some dropbox space for you.
