personal preferences aside, the best idea i can add to this discussion would be the ability to "solo" or isolate each aspect of the signal chain. when this mode is activated, clicking on any "module" or point in the signal chain will hide or make semi-transparent any "wires" or audio signals not directly relevant to the selected module. for very complex routing schemes it could also be useful to see the IN and OUT flows independently as well since some people will surely try to route everything to everything else.

since i cant really picture a viable routing scheme without lines or "wires" showing the signal flow, clickable to access relevant options like send panning and gain etc. it would be useful to have them color coded based on things like origin track color, or simply different colors for when there is significant audio flow or not etc. MAINLY, THESE WIRES SHOULD HAVE ACCESS TO AS MUCH FUNCTIONALITY AS POSSIBLE, NOT JUST BE A PURELY VISUAL AID mucking up the interface. i picture this as a toggle overlay in the mixer but it could be anywhere.

we just need a solid visual guide to our routing and signal flow. (this matrix we've got now is simply too tedious to analyze). for me anyways...

one more thing: one handy thing buzz had was the ability to right click any "wire" in the chain and see a little spectral view of the signal. i didnt use it much but its definitely useful, no?

Looks like Image Line will be introducing an implementation of this in FL Studio v10. Seems pretty well thought out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmqevuEqag4

I especially like the "drag along audio links for volume, right-click to mute". Seems like a good way to do this. Maybe reaper can pick up some ideas from this for the future.

By the way, for those who suggest using bidule in reaper, it's really not intuitive. For starters the VST list is organized following the win explorer folder structure, unlike reaper, so it's hard to find stuff, plus it has all kinds of modules for building your own synth, freq manipulation etc.... It's more of a prototyping software for serious VST development rather than a straightforward chainer/rack. This really needs to be done at the host level.

this is so doable, and i think AudioMulch is the simplest and best implementation of this idea, but the new volume drag features in FL are really sweet.

And hopefully JCS can get onto it sometime soonish, cos ive been sweatin Ross at AudioMulch for years to implement VST and/or ReWire into Mulch and the dude isnt interested. Go figure?

Thanks for this. As soon as its up n running its rendered AudioMulch useless. This is Winning!

This is the awesome simplicity ive been searching for.

Now to let Ross in on the bad news.

I hope that this will be the next thing on the list...

I can't stand the clamsiness of the FX window the routings is so not fun to use...killing the inspiration ...

even flstudio has an awesome chainer ("patcher") in fl10...

i've been trying to just use the mixer for routing. you know you can just drag from send to send. it seems much more intuitive to do things there than the same actions in the tcp. but i do concur.

actually i have this suspicion that it will appear like a sneaky surprise later in v4 betas. mostly since it hasn't had any attention in the alpha's yet though most every other dialog has. makes me think some kind of major overhaul is cooking.

I don't need surprises, I need a better, more creative way to make massive patches....

anyway I'm afraid that you are wrong...even tho I tend to believe as well because it will be a big success and the creativity rating of reaper will rise up if they will do it...

but think about it, the modular fx routing fr has been elevated, almost every other dialog got at least a visual overhaul during the alpha stage, some much more, but not the fx window, even though it is the most needful of overhaul and most complained about. don't you think it recieved not even minor touch-ups is likely because something bigger is underway? but ok yea maybe i'm just wishing too hard.

would anyone else prefer to see sends in the fx window? i think the fx dialog would be a better place for them since the i/o window is a abomination anyway. and since sends are usually fx.

i'd like to see a modular signal flow layout for each track in one simple window. no convoluted matrices. no vertical, hard-to-read wannabe i/o mixer with a scrollbar. just a clear, complete layout of where the sound is going and what's happening to it along the way. something like in bidule or buzz (boxes for each effect with cable lines flowing between them in a user-organizable space). yes, just like in post 37.

Default Audio Signal Indicators!

I just wanna add (and it may have already been mentioned) that a most useful function of this feature should be visible audio indicators on all routing lines. In other words, it should be immediately apparent when audio is being passed from one module to the next.

This is the main problem I have with the current system; it seems to be set up correctly, but I can't tell where the audio line is failing when I don't hear what I expect to.

The "cables" between modules could simply change color when an audio signal is detected. This would help tons and be a big improvement on typical modular systems.

Yes, this, I agree completely: "I can't stand the clumsiness of the FX window the routings is so not fun to use...killing the inspiration ..."

Gosh, having an EnergyXT like plugin chain per track would be such an awesomeness I can't stress enough how much awesomeness that would be. So much quicker to route different instruments and FX, make them mono/stereo, change the order of FX, route MIDI... it would just be perfect and so easy to route stuff however you like.

I still use EnergyXT within Reaper [sometimes with multiple inputs and outputs like 1/2/4/8] because it's just so much easier to use it for complex routings than using the pinning system. But you know, EXT 1.41 is showing its age... some plugins are not compatible with it any more, it would be absolutely brilliant if we could have this kind of ultimately flexible and easy to use plugin chains in Reaper.

So this idea gets +100^ from me and my vote in the tracker.

Cheers!

I'm pretty sure there is a 'no go' somewhere on the forum from the devs on this, probably quite old, but pretty sure it is there, it was something to do with it being too visually complicated in big routing set ups and Reapers way is to replicate patchbays or such.

Hopefully they will change their minds (Has happened quite a bit)

I'd suggest if you selected some of those modules and hit "enter", it'll open a separate view of those tracks or automation lanes of the plugins. The automation (if it is there) should be shown as a small icon in those connection lines of the module window.

Yes.. im struggling with the current system right now. I actually avoid using too much automation because its a damn pain to work with. Only have 3-5 instruments right now.. and its a mess

Edit:
If this thing will be properly done in Reaper, I would recommend Reaper for all my friends.. I could even use some psychological violence if necessary. Right now it like: "you should try Reaper, its pretty good and cheap too". But then it would be like: "You dummy, you don't know what you're missing if you don't try Reaper"

That looks great DarkStar. More modern version of EnergyXT 1.4. Virtual cables make patching fun and more easy in comparison to drop-down menus.

Why Reaper is so clumsy when it comes to GUI?????

please make a visible routings (cables) view....

so needed!

This idea is still appealing today.
I wonder if the new wiring view for the routing matrix could serve as a skeleton for this feature?

Wow ten years? I think Track Wiring View is a pretty good indication the devs don't understand our desires here or maybe just don't sympathize.
