maybe people are fooled by version numbers, and expect V6 to be hugely different than V5... and hey, it IS but really it has become different gradually throughout the lifetime of V5... just think of all the changes that kept growing during the V5 time... ton of them

Reaper is different than other DAW's in that way... while others may get a ver. change every year, reaper gets updates every few weeks or months...

would you actually prefer to wait a year? Not me thanks.... I like how Cockos does it just fine... keep on keeping on

Not sure you need "actual behind the scenes knowledge" to understand that Reaper is updated frequently and incrementally, as opposed to the less frequent updates of most other DAWs. But sure if you want to feel like you really got a zinger in there

Yeah - V5 + a shiny new UI, and a couple of extra goodies.

I'll tinker on V5 for a while longer, mix complex audio on other platforms.
Nothing special about it at all

No. But apparently you felt the need.

Plus, you're wrong. If you claim to know the hows, whys and whens about a project, you better be pals with or a member of the project team. Or else your guess is as good as mine.

There's some cool insight into the dev process in a recent podcast conversation with Justin:

https://dawbench.libsyn.com/episode-...present-future

A couple of sections jumped out at me:

https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=228386

And BTW, lots of info about the Reaper dev approach can be easily gleaned from direct quotes such as from interviews/conversations like that one above -- there are many interviews and articles/interviews that have been written/recorded about Reaper with Justin over the years. You don't need to personally know Justin to get a good understanding of what his approach is... he seems pretty consistent and transparent over the years in those interviews.

Releasing reaper 6, a person would think they would have corrected all the errors in reported in version 5. Load version 6 for about 30 minutes is all I needed to convince me to return to version 5.

people need to stop being hung up on the numbering. the devs obviously aren't. once it drags out to four places, it's time to roll it over.

So let's go through the original question one-by-one -

Did important developers leave the company?

No.

Why this update?

In order to have a new platform on which future new features can be built.

Do they need money?

No.

Are they broke?

No.

I am anxious.

Hello, Anxious!

Do they have stuff problems?

George Carlin can answer that one -

I like the new look.

It's all a matter of personal taste and what you're used to (what you taught yourself to like). Taste is something you acquire throughout your life. I used a lot of Logic, Studio One and Nuendo the last few years so dark UIs resonate with me.

There are many things I would like to see improved in Reaper. But I'm totally OK with V6. Cockos does things differently. As many pointed out, they release big new features whenever they want and don't wait for the big releases, holding things back. I commend them for it.

Of course there are things I don't like in Reaper at all, too.
First of all the inconsistencies. Inconsistencies in design: all the knobs and controls look differently, then you open a plugin window and everything looks again totally differently. Inconsistent naming: Media Items here, $item in the wildcards, but $item actually means the active Take Name. Hard for beginners to understand what's what when same things have a different name. More inconsistencies in the UI: To save presets, in plugins you click the +, in render settings there's a button called "Presets", the batch converter also has "Presets", but FX chains don't even have a button and you have to know to right-click in the FX list. Why not name it "Presets" and put a button everywhere. These inconsistencies are littered around everywhere. Not to mention the visual looks that are inconsistent everywhere, too. For me it's a matter of usability and when everything looks and works a bit differently in every window, you spend more time thinking about what's what than actually doing productive work.

Then there are all the millions of settings. I would like better default settings and less settings to tweak. There's a total settings overload for every little detail in Reaper. Too much choice paralyzes people (or me at least). But then again, people love that about Reaper, that it's customizable. I'm fine with that. I make settings once and it's mostly a fire and forget. I don't touch them for a few years.

But I'm excited that a lot of work has been done under the hood for Macs like Metal acceleration and I'm eager to see what this tech allows in the future.

I like Reaper, I would like if it was more "out of the box" and I didn't have to install SWS, ReaPack and stuff separately, which I need, and which is a lot of overhead keeping everything up to date, but this is just me. I bought my v6-v7.99 license and I'm looking forward to continue working with it some more.

You don't have to go back to V5 to change the looks.

You can use your favourite V5 theme in V6 and still have the new functionality.

This has been pointed out in multiple posts since V6 was unleashed.

Quite so, I used Reaper 4 themes to avoid the Reaper 5 default theme (Nitpicky version improved it, but not far enough for my taste).

No doubt numerous new user themes and variants on the default theme will be available anyway.

We still don't know if the non themeable parts will ever be able to become themed in a future update, or if that is too much to ask of Reaper's code as it stands.

Yes, that is true, and I'd hazard a guess that much is still possible.

Still early days... Much is yet to come, I am sure, even if the "default theme" remains unchanged.

The fact that he did not state that this is just his own POV.

But I am not a native English speaker, and hence I might be fooled by literally translating his wording in my head. I am trained to know that in English "you" does not mean me personally but what is "man" in German (i.e. "one"). But in German pure naked statements, not stating literally impossible stuff, need to be understood as claiming a general kind of fact, and not a POV.

No dog in this fight, but see his comment in the context of the question he was answering above. The poster asked him "why?" he didn't like the update or whatever.

Not sure how that can be taken any other way than … "This how I personally feel about it." … since that's what the the conversation they were having was all about to begin with, how he personally felt about it.

I was going to post the exact opposite so I might as well do it here..

Thanks devs and thanks Justin for continuously upgrading your great product. I use it every day, it never failed on me, I'm always productive with it and most of all I always find a solution to any problem I might have. It even runs on Linux now.

I like the new theme (probably because I was excited about retina support for a long time and generally like dark themes) and I'm now finally switching from the 3.0 theme.

It's simply a communication misunderstanding that is so common on the internet.

"This theme is the best" can be interpreted as a statement of fact and not a personal opinion or feeling.

"This theme is the best in my opinion" makes it clear that you are not saying it is the best for everyone but just for you.
