..and when it happens there will be a few inconsistencies between the main and MIDI windows to sort!!

good suggestion, but it has too many limitations (i found five):
1. track needs focus (otherwise it get pasted to the wrong track)
2. edit-cursor needs to be on the item
3. if you have two tracks with 2 items and you want to duplicate both, you have to select the bottom item before the upper one (otherwise they get shifted down one track when pasting)
4. if you have two tracks with 2 items at different positions and you want to duplicate both, the duplicate only works properly for the first time. on the next duplicate they won't get pasted directly after each other because the edit-cursor is at the right of the last item
5. if a track has focus (is selected), the track get's duplicated = bad
So an own action with whole duplicate functionality still needed!

Please please please. [crtl] + [d] = Duplicate item(s) placing them butt up against the last original item on the original track.

I simply don't see any reason to NOT have ctrl+d act as a duplicate.

"As for the Duplicate feature.. i spent 2 hours looking for this!!
Coming from........ [ctrl + d] duplicates the selected item / range / multiple item selection or range selection, placing the duplates immediately after the range/item/multi-item selection."
right on +1
This is crucial to my < workflow > and i'am really missing it.
ctrl c then ctrl v does not accomplish:
[ctrl + d] duplicates the selected item / range / multiple item selection or range selection, placing the duplates immediately after the range/item/multi-item selection."
Does it?

I could use a ctrl-d shortcut. I'm used to duplicating stuff in Ableton live and I like how the duplicated clip is placed right after the orginal clip. Ctrl-d is also useful for multiple items because you don't have to worry about a clip being copied one track lower.
I don't think it would hurt anyone to have this functionality.

Ctrl-D for duplicate...
I've been using Ctrl-D for almost as long as I've been here to duplicate tracks or items, depending on the focus (doesn't work in the midi editor though, but there's probably a macro for that too). I had to check what it was set to, it's been so long...here it is :
* You can probably add 'move cursor left to edge of selected item' at the end too, if it suits you.

Multiple item duplicate one after the other, bam bam bam? Mine does that, I just checked it before...if you mean the midi editor, well that isn't an item, so...
edit; ahh just read back, you mean duplicating more than one item on separate tracks or in different time positions...nope, it doesn't do that.

Hi bumping this old thread, wondering if there's been any progress with it? Would also love ctrl+D (cubase sx) style duplicating!

in the tricks & tips forum, I posted a link to a macro-workaround. It works on a combination of selected item(s) & time selection:
Make a time+item selection (alt+r.click+drag) then press ctrl+d. Proper track selection is automatic.
If you want to duplicate an item, rather than a time selection, then a simple tweak will set the time selection to the item.
It is useful here.
Greetings

seems like a decent workaround. The simple functionality that was requested here though is still missing. Personally coming from a Steinberg background, even though I've been using Reaper for a long time now, I still miss the CTRL D. I don't see why it couldn't be implemented.

I want to bump this thread. 3 years left but reaper is still not there yet. th
Despite that we have a workaround of duplicate as a macros it doesnt always work as expected. I tried my own macros first then another one but sometimes I have my duplicated items offset vertically and that sucks. and it would be also cool to have that duplicate command work with MIDI notes.

I vote for this too.. please Justin!!

We also have this in Protools, and I use it constantly, exactly as outlined here. A BIG time saver, when you need it.
-And it should also work with midi data.

I used that functionality a lot in Cubase. Both for items in the arrangement view, as well as midi events in the piano roll. Sorry I am not much into constructing and troubleshooting macros (not when making music).

A simple macro for this is this set of actions:
- edit > copy items
- Item navigation: Move cursor right to edge of selected items
- Item: Paste items/tracks
Map it to ctrl+D and voila
It works properly only when editing cursor is within selected item
(which is by default after you click an item), and after a duplication
has been just made.
Be careful not to use it on items that are snapped to grid to many
times, as pasted items will have a slight offset (bug?). So optionally
quantize them after duplication, or put that in a macro to display
a dialog after duplication.

It is possible to do multiple tracks by using a few clever sws commands but really devs.. Would be VERY nice to have a real duplicate function!

Actually it's about getting a native duplicate function that works
properly in any situation/selection, which I fully support.
Also duplicating multiple items via macro can easily be done too,
you just need the first (top) track selected.
Just saying it's possible, not the most convenient but possible if needed.

Not for notes, no. There is no action to put the cursor at the end of note selection.

If you have the sws extension you don't even need to select the top track first. You can use sws actions in you custom action to use the command called something like "select first track of selected items". I might have to look at my macro to give you more detail than that but it definitely works with some work around.
Is there a voting feature request for this yet? We need one if not!

A native duplicate items, notes or selections would be a great addition. I would be happy if this was implemented. I have only just started using Reaper and I do find it a bit clunky on the basic editing, selecting and zooming behaviors.
Maybe I am just not used to the way this application works, but I think every good music app should have the basic workflow sorted first such as copy/duplicate, zoom items. I know Reaper has most of these things but it's hard to get used to.

This one works nice. You can have multiple items selected. Also selection on multiple tracks is possible, as far as I can tell. It pastes at the right edge of the rightmost selected item. SWS extension needed.
SWS: Save time selection, slot 1
SWS: select only track(s) with selected item(s)
Track: Set first selected track as last touched track
Time selection: set time selection to selected items
Go to end of time selection
Edit -> Copy items
Item: Paste items/tracks
SWS: Restore time selection
Hope this helps you through the night
Not for the MIDI editor, though.
EDIT: Voted anyway, of course.

oh my GOOOOD! simplify man!
the very first post should say 'i want ctl-d like in cubase.'
no need to explain unless theres anyone that never used cubase, then id explain:
duplicate item along in a row as said above
- edit > copy items
- Item navigation: Move cursor right to edge of selected items
- Item: Paste items/tracks
too bad move cursor right to edge doesent work!
but fortunately 'repeat paste' sws extension DOES work but i have to hit a shortcut key, mouse to the repeat box and type the number of repeats but i often dont know how many repeats i hit ctl-d until its filled long enough.. tooo slooooow!
however, 'Map it to ctrl+D and voila' also brings up the next issue:
yes i have to fussa round, but any new user needs such an essential function as ctl-d by default not by having to mess like that! IE im here as a reaper user of 2 yrs, just starting to use it in the studio, and had to come here and use the search fuction and all just to get a most basic function!
BTW ctl-d is common in graphics programs too for duplicate, its a natural for reaper to integrate as a default function and this is the request, make it default not a custom thing, essential functions should not require customization!

.. and for those of us who have already assigned Ctrl+d to another Action ?
Seriously, if any new Keyboard Shortcuts are introduced in new releases, they need to be clearly stated in the Release Notes so that users can deal with any conflicts.

Well, doesn't custom assigned actions override "stock" actions?
This actually was the first thing i missed when i started using reaper a couple of years ago. It's really a basic enhancement of workflow that should be there.

Finally it's almost there. With the new nudge stuff the normal duplicate for items is possible.
Actions seuence:
1) open up nudge items dialogue
2) set duplicate by 1 item selections
3) nudge right!
4) open up actions list
5) find: save nudge dialog setting 1(or 2 or 3 or .. whatever)
6) hit run!
7) create new action called 'Duplicate'
8) add action: nudge items right by saved nudge dialog settings 1 (or whatever you assigned on step 5 )
9) hit OK
10) ------
11) PROFIT!
Justin! You are a pathetic loser and REAPER will keep behind untill you shape up ))))

Here is a duplicate macro that works flawlessly under any condition you can throw at it:
And the paste action that is used in it:
That paste will even include the empty space copied around an item, so if your paste overlaps another item, it will delete anything that should be empty space.
