Default keping mulitple takes of a song

How do I keep 2 or 3 full takes of a full song in Reaper, ProTools has Playlists,
In Reaper. Does this work the same way as if I was doing muliple punch in passes on recording full songs instead of just parts? then pick the lane numbers related to the tune version?
Geez I hope I'm making sense.
Thanks.
Jack

Hello Jack. I do not understand what you are asking. Maybe if you explain what you are trying to accomplish. Do you have 2 or 3 different mixes of the same song and want to compare them? Or maybe compare reference mixes with your mixes?

If nothing else, my non-answer answer moves your post back to the top of the page so others may chime in LOL :-)

Default try it this way

Okay
If I am laying down a drum track and want to do say 2 more complete passes of the whole song. Do all 3 takes show up they same was as if i were say punching in on just a verse 3 times. in other words as 3 takes that I can split, pick and choose, comp between them.
Does that make more sense?

By default, if you record a new take over an old one it will keep both. You can have as many as you like, and certainly create comps from the best bits.

I am on vacation at the moment, don't have reaper. In front of me, but there's a menu option to display them in lanes.

There's a whole chapter in the User Guide on this, and no doubt numerous videos also.

Default Thanks

That's what I needed. It doesn't matter if it's 8 bars or the whole song.
Thank you.

By default Reaper will only show the latest take. If you switch to 'Free Item Positioning mode' it'll show all the takes.

There's also the 'show all takes in lanes (when room)' action.

For free item postioning, right click on individual track panels (it's a per track option).

Show all takes in lanes (when room) was changed a few releases ago to just Show all takes (when room), but it does the same thing. See Options menu.

I have done all that you have recommended. So as I record my guitar, it puts my multiple takes into the Audio folder with timestamped.wav files. I can see all those timestamped.wav files but Reaper only displays the last one. Even after I have enabled those suggestions above, I am unable to recall these takes and display them on Reaper. For example, let's say I made five takes. Reaper shows the 5th(most current) one. How I get to display take#3 or take#2 ?

Pls comment

You most likely don't want free item positioning and show all takes (when room) both on for the same track at the same time.

If you want to show takes in lanes, turn f.i.p. for that track off.

The other thing which I'm pretty sure you would already have done is to make sure there is enough track height to display all takes.

To test it, could I suggest you do this.

Create a new track. Make sure that Show all takes when room is on.

Record two or three short takes on that track ... for the experiment they can be silent if you wish.

You should now see two or three takes piled on top of each other, rather like in the attachments (of course, color etc will not be the same).

@Nicholas, this was way too cool !! It works perfectly as you described.
I turned f.i.p(Free Item Positioning) off and 'show all takes is ON'. That was a very good tip to keep the Track window wide such that I can see all the takes one stacked over the other with correct labels. Now I can play and keep the part I like.

Thanks so much !!

You're welcome. A lot of people trip up over REAPER's take system at first, so you're not alone.
