Default Help! Why has Reaper had a drastic drop in performance on my system?

I been using my old 2011 MacBook pro with reaper for some time but recently I've seen track counts and plug-in count drop dramatically.
I understand that my computer is pretty old and it won't be able to achieve the types of performance that new computers can but I don't understand how 10 months ago I could run a session with 64 active tracks and about 92 fx and now it struggles with 41 active tracks and 24fx. I loaded the 64-track session and it won't even run. My current session has become very difficult to finish. Freezing tracks and increasing the buffer size has had very little effect.
Also when reaper is running and minimized everything else on my system becomes painfully slow and this never used to be a problem
My system has basically been unchanged for a long time so I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Mac OS 10.12.6
Reaper v6.45

Im guessing you are recording to the main HD and filling it up

Am I wrong? or do you use a separate HD for the projects?

Hav you run anything like ONYX to do maintenance on the Mac itself?

Hi shanabit.
I have separate system drives and recording drives. I almost never write anything to the system drive if I can help it.

Any reason you are not on High Sierra there? I don't recall the last OS you can run on your machine

About 3-4 months ago I had an update and many of my vst plug-ins became unavailable and were no longer in my FX list.
There's some bug that was corrupting my reaper-vstplugins64.ini
I went around in circles trying to get the problem solved. When a possible solution arrived I had already completely restored my mac and turned off any auto updates and everything was pretty back to normal.
I'm working on some music at the moment and I don't want to risk having to go through it all again until certain projects are finished. Or I may not update at all and decide to upgrade to a Mac Mini or an iMac refurb.

sorry for the late reply.

I think you may need to curate your system a little.
Are you running 64 bit or 32 bit in bridging mode?
Your VSTi may no longer be compatible with system upgrade.
Sierra well past sell by date now.
Good luck

time stretching and sample rate mismatches (e.g: recorded content at 44kHz, but session at 48kHz) can add a ton of extra realtime load for resampling etc. is all of that set up correctly?

For the record, Im running OCLP here to allow Monterey on my 2013 iMac. You may want to look into that as well. I have zero issues with it here.

Sierra is OLD bro, Im surprised Reaper still works on it to be honest and especially any plugins

Thanks, Shanabit. I'll look into OCLP.

Thanks, dub. Yes all the sample rates are at 44khz.
