No sound when midi recording in MIDI Editor ?

Dear all,

- VSTi Track, record enabled and Record Monitoring set to ON.
- An empty MIDI item on this VSTi Track
- I open MIDI Editor for the empty MIDI Item and then i open Virtual MIDI Keyboard.
- I go into Record Mode.
- I play notes on Virtual MIDI Keyboard.
Outcome: the notes do get recorded but i don't hear them while playing them in.

Am i overseeing some setting?

Is the Track set to Record: Input (audio or MIDI)? Or to Record: Output (MIDI)?


And do you get audio when playing notes on the VMK without recording?
If not, maybe check the MIDI channel in the VMK (so it's matching the MIDI channel of the VSTi).

Hi solger, thank you for helping me.

Record set to midi input and midi channel is set ok.

The weird thing is that i do hear the notes when playing, while being in STOP Mode.
As soon as i go into RECORD Mode and play VMK, i don't hear the played notes anymore.

In Midi Editor, check Options - Sync editor transport to project transport.

Yeah, very strange.

Have you already tried if you can replicate the same behavior on a new Track? Just to check if the issue only happens on this specific Track ...

Just tested on new VSTi track ; same issue on that Track.

OK. Can you maybe save and attach a small .RPP project example file with this issue to a post?
Maybe this way we can check if something might look out of the ordinary.


And are you using Reaper v5.78 in this case? Or one of the pre-release versions?

I am using Reaper 5.79rc2 - 64bit ATM, OSX 10.13.4, but i have this issue for a very long time.
Can't remember i have ever had it working ok.

Surely with all your years of experience you haven`t fallen for the oldest "oops" in the book? Accidentally set record monitoring to "off"? This would mean you could hear yourself playing when NOT recording but all would go silent when it was recording. Unless my memopry has failed me once again...

I expect you are wondering what made me think of this.... last time I caught myself out with it was a couple of weeks ago!

Did some more research;
It appears the issue arises when i have Record Mode for the VSTi Track set to Record: MIDI overdub/replace.
When i set Record Mode to "input (audio/midi), i do hear the notes which i play during recording.
(I do not see the logic behind this).
However, another weird thing then arises: the notes that i play aren't created during recording, they are created when i stop recording.

Thanks for the .RPP file.

I only had a quick look with v5.78, but the behavior seems to be the same here: no audio when using Record: MIDI overdub/replace (regardless if the MIDI Notes are triggered via the VMK or an external MIDI keyboard).

Very weird. The MIDI Notes are created here instantly ...

Ah, I think I just got an idea

Try this:

1) Go to Project Settings > Advanced
2) Set Item mix behavior to [Items always mix]
