Is it possible to send MIDI data to a mixer w/motorised faders?
Hey Guys,
I'm trying to get my DMX R-100 mixing console working as a control surface for REAPER.
So far I've managed to get REAPER to read the CC data when a physical fader is moved on the console and move a track fader. I did this by assigning a custom action.
At the moment I can't get REAPER to reverse this process; I need to send out MIDI CC data when the REAPER track volume fader moves. The reason I want this facility is that I'd like visual feedback on the physical console faders and also so that when the automation is in touch mode, the faders are in their appropriate position.
This thread http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=55378 makes the outlook seem qutie negative!
Any ideas?
Tim :-)

In short: no. Actions dan't send back midi to a surface.
However, there is a seperate section in Preferences, called 'Control Surfaces'. If the DMX support MCU or HUI, you can use these control surfaces.

Well I have to say that is quite a disappointment as the R100 doesn't support MCU or HUI.
Is there any workaraound available? I've managed to get ReacontrolMIDI to successfully send data to the DMX so if there was a way for it to follow the volume envelope...

Some thoughts:
THere is an application called GenMCE that translates generic CC messages to MCU. This with midiyoke could perhaps help.
Also, I have written a control surface plugin for the VS-2480, with hard-coded CC values for the faders , pan knobs, and buttons. Perhaps if the R-100 can change it's CC values for the knobs and faders, this could work as a workaround. What is configureable on the R-100 in terms of CC values in control surface mode? If they are fixed I could try recompiling my plugin with the CC values.
Edit: i looked at this and it seems that they are fixed. Knowing that, it should not be a too big of a problem to write control surface support based on my VS-2480 plugin....but i am sorta very busy now. If i knew this would benefit other users i probably could dedicate some time to this in the next couple of weeks/months. Obviously i can be persuaded otherwise as well :-)
Edit2: Geoff Waddington is writing a generic control surface plugin, not sure what the status is at the moment.

You're lucky i was a little bored
Grab this file and place it in Program Files/Reaper/Plugins. Make sure the MIDI in/out to/from the R-100 are disabled in Devices/Midi devices. Then go to control surfaces, click add, and select the DMX control surface option.
This only adds support for the first 24 tracks and the master fader. I chose 'mode 1' so that the master faders responds to CC50 (MTR1) and the track faders to CC1..CC24. No support for the other 24 tracks (for the time being), no support for PANs (for the time being).
it might horribly crash on you, but please give it a quick try on a clean 24 track project. Also, only XP 32-bit is supported.

Yves, you are a hero! Unfortunately I'm running Win7 64bit but I'll try and find a way of connecting to the aux pc in the studio which is running xp 32bit.
Can't wait to try this out!

actually, it turned out that compiling for the 64 bit version was quite easy, but i can't test it obviously, so here it is

Hi Yves,
The 64bit version doesn't seem to work, I get an error on starting REAPER that says something about it not being designed to run under windows 64bit.
Thanks for the effort though, you are a legend! I'd like to buy you a beer or three!
The PSU in our aux pc has just gone kaput so it might be a little while before I can test the 32bit version. I'll try and get it running again ASAP and report back!

Tim,
are you sure you are running the 64 bit version of Reaper then ? I think you are running Reaper/32 bit, on a 64 bit Windows machine, which means you'll have to use the 32bit dll. I must admit i gave you some false information before when i said Xp32 was only supported, i really meant the original dll was only supported under Reaper32

Hi Yves,
I've got both the 64bit version and the 32bit version installed but I mainly use the 64bit version as I work with memory hungry VSTi plugins. If the 32bit .dll will run under win7 x64 then I'll try and get that working!

Hi Yves,
I've copies the .dll across to the Program Files(x86)\REAPER\Plugins directory but the R100 isn't listed... see attached pic for proof!

OKokok I did something stupid! It's working!!!
First glances show some erratic movement on faders that haven;t been touched, but I'll do some more thorough testing and report back!!!
Ace!

OK, lets first get the 32 bit version running, including support for 48 tracks, and pans, and then i'll focus on getting you the 64 bit version.

I'm back!
Hi Yves,
Sorry I've been off radar for a while, I've was lead astray by another project. Hopefully I will now get more of a chance to test this in the next couple of weeks and give you some decent feedback (that's if you are still interested!).
The last time I was experimenting there was some erratic fader movement, I'll try and post a video within the next couple of days to show you what I mean.
Thanks,
Tim.
