Complexity is king! Expand your mind with this stuff...
I'm a drummer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist who hates the cookie-cutter simplicity and tight boundaries of today's music. I love progressive anything and indie hip-hop the most... If you're like me, check these out:
"Umbra" by Karnivool (the song I have on Repeat x1)
"Return to Earth" by The Contortionist
"G.O.A.T." by Polyphia
"Lingus" by Snarky Puppy
"Mob Mentality" by Earthside
"The Brain Dance" by Animals As Leaders
"Uneasy Hearts Weigh The Most" by Dance Gavin Dance
"One of Us is the Killer" by Dilinger Escape Plan
and for the true hip-hop fans...
"Bar Breaker" and "Motel" by Prof had me up and moving... This guy is brilliant.
"The Impossible Kid" (album) by Aesop Rock... Can't go wrong with any of his stuff
Very good neo-glam. I really hate that there's no room for a band like this to achieve wider attention these days. They are so good. This is a perfect glam song.
The bassist is Sean Lennon's partner, and they also have their own band which does very good stuff as well.
I saw these cats in Delhi a couple years ago, minus the flute player. Think they had a tanpura instead. Was an incredible show, although it was a little long on "the play the scale up and down as fast as you can instead of play the form" thing. Still, quite enjoyable.

What an unrepeatable experience, I saw them too back in 2001.
A very interesting band. At first I was sort of not getting it, but I quickly got drawn in. I was thinking sort of Can meets Patti Smith on muscle relaxers. Very hypnotic. Very creative guitar work.

That is some real smart dumb playing/writing. It sort of is/isn't there; the bass/drums are absolutely on the money too.
I've heard a couple if tracks before, and assumed it was happy accident stuff, but obviously there is real intention there. Good stuff.
You may be already aware of her, but if you like that kind of thing, Emma Ruth Rundle has some really nice work that has that sort of hypnotic vibe, though more with a bit more garage rock leaning vocally.
And Daughter is sort of angelic shoegaze, and very trancey and nice.

Can, Patti, and to my ear, The Fall, whom I absolutely love. It's a great combo, really digging Dry Cleaning quite a bit. Refreshing.
One of the most out there bands around. I'd seen a live show from them before, but they are even more adventuresome than I'd thought.
It's like John Coltrane meets Fripp meets Zappa meets mental illness. They will pretty much go anywhere within a song.
This is an awesome performance! Their earlier stuff comes across as adventurous math rock or whatever, but adding the horn section and some jazz harmony to the palette really makes this stuff stand out. This set is really tight and fun and goes into some crazy territory. Their videos are very fun too!.
I'd never heard of this guy before, and just stumbled across some songs. It's like Big Star meets Elliot Smith. The songs are so hypnotic and emotional despite being delivered in a very non-emotional way.
Larry Graham on bass, Neil Schonn on guitar. Various musicians from Santana's band...
...and of course, the legendary un-crowned Queen of funk, Betty Davis:
Here is something you might like. In particular the song at 2:13 is really nice, super-atmospheric. It's clearly channeling lots of soul and R&B influences, but in a very modern context. The singer is mesmerizing, and she out-fro's Betty pretty significantly :-)
