Default Mogain, FetHead, Cloudlifter, HAD-48, Angus specs and comparisons

Tascam 2x2
- Gain = 57db
- THD = 0.003% or less
- S/N = 101dB or more
- EIN = -127dBu or less
- Input Impedance = 2.2k ohms

HAD-48
- Gain = 20db or 40db
- Noise (A-weighted) = -120dB
- Output impedance = 150 ohms

Cloudlifter
- Gain: 20 dB
- Noise = -88 dB @ 5 kHz
- Noise = -88db at 5k hz (another independent measurement. Jim Williams)
- Distortion: 0.09% @ -30 dB, 0.05% @ -35 db
- CMMR = -39 dB
- Input Impedance = 3k ohms

FetHead
- Gain = 24 dB
- Noise = -84 dB @ 5 kHz
- Noise = -79 db at 5 k hz (another independent measurement. Jim Williams)
- EIN ~ -128.5 dB (speculation)
- Distortion = 0.5% @ -30 dB, 0.2% @ -35 dB
- CMMR = -29 dB
- Output impedance = 200 ohms
- Input Impedance = 22k ohms

Mogain
- Gain = 25dB
- EIN: Less than -126dBu
- THD+N: Less than 0.002% @ 1kHz
- Output impedance = 150 ohms**

BeesNeez Angus
- Gain = 18dB

Above is all the relevant info I can find. Any fills are welcome, especially for the Angus!! It seems to me, based on specs, that nothing is quieter than my Tascam pres (I must be misunderstanding). Which device will do the most to minimize my noise-floor (I get some slight HF hiss when turning up my dynamic mics, and want minimal noise so I can compress, EQ etc. as much as possible).

**Apparently the Mogain is quieter in practice than on paper because of it's low output impedance.
Anyhow with experience using more than one of these, who can make comparisons, we can figure out the subjective quietest and compare that to whichever should be technically quietest.

Triton Audio FetHead VS Cloud Microphones Cloudlifter

Do I really need a Cloudlifter for my quiet mics?

**Again, I'm posting the same thread in Gearlutz, so those inclined can follow both threads, and anything very informative I'll copy over and update** https://www.gearslutz.com/board/so-m...mparisons.html

Listening to this video,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izeVBY9KPWo

The SS and Cathedral Pipes are loudest (especially SS, don't buy that thing).

The FetHead, CL1, and McBoost keep it at nearly the same level, but differently 'coloured'. Would like some other ears on this. Fethead is louder in high-frequencies, and CL1 in sub-bass.

The direct signal, without any pre-preamp is actually the quietest!

The wave-form makes the last 3 recordings *look* louder than the preceding 2, which is untrue... so now I'm wondering why they look bigger when they sound quieter.

In this review he uses a

2i2
-EIN = Less than -128 dBu (A-Weighted)
-Gain = 50 dB
-Input = 3k Ω

Which might be slightly quieter than my 2x2, but maybe not (though it sounds very quiet on his voice).

Still... I'm getting a touch of noise. Looks like I won't lower it without buying an $800 preamp (please tell me I'm wrong).

Maybe the Angus is quieter. Even if it got 10gb clean gain, as long as it lowered my noisefloor, I'd be happy.

I did an experiment today - ran the FetHead through my Tascam with the Tascam at 0dB gain, then with no Fethead and the Tascam at 28dB gain.

I recorded some pink noise from my phone; didn't move the microphone or phone at all while recording.

I recorded both pink noise and silence, then turned up the volume inside Reaper so both had the same RMS volume for the noise recordings (to make sure the signal was equal).

Conclusion

The noise-floor was almost exactly the same with the Fethead and without. The FetHead was a hair quieter.

So I would say the FetHead EIN is -127.5

Beware of buying from Triton, I bought a Fethead a while back, it didn't last, I contacted the company and they got back to me within an hour, told me to send it to them and they'd repair it free of charge, all I had to do was pay the postage, which by the way is almost half the price of the Fethead, I sent it off, then after a couple of weeks I emailed them asking if there was any progress, they never replied, after repeated emails, still no reply, they just totally ignore my correspondence, not much I can do as I live in the UK and this company are in the Netherlands, so this is just an heads up to anyone thinking about purchasing this product, don't.

I don't understand your noise measurement. I just measured a CL-1 and I got:
Gain: +24 dB
EIN -128.4 dBu(A) with 150 Ω source
EIN -129.5 dBu(A) with 50 Ω source
EIN -125.6 dBu(A) with 600 Ω source
