I'm on a Beatle bender right now. I've gone down the REDD rabbit hole.

Does anyone know what the small green box of faders on the REDD.51 purpose is? My assumption is echo sends, but it's not clear from any literature I can find.

Oooohh ok! It's what we would call a mixbuss today. This helps me understand where the RS-124 figures into things.

I think Mixbuss is the Stereo Buss to the 2Track, these are Tape Sends to the Multitrack for recording.

I think this desk had 8 Mic ins and 2 Aux ins and 4 Tape sends. This is for the recording session.

Wait, aren't the four faders in the middle of the main module the tape sends?

It is possible that the 4 main faders on the board were tape sends to the original 4 track machine, and the add-on box with 4 more faders were added when the studio got an 8-track machine as sends to tracks 5-8.

I found a photo on Flickr of the unit itself. It was entitled the "4 channel Ringo mixer." So this was a workaround for Geoff Emerick to add more mics to the kit.

"Geoff: We never really took notes about how things were done. In the early days, around Revolver, we were still on 4-track, so I think: it was basically one overhead, a snare mic, a bass drum mic, and a hi-hat mic. Later I started to close-mike the toms, and I’d do a pre-mix—putting four of the mics onto a premix and then onto one fader, because we only bad eight inputs on the mixing console."

Okay, so the box is meant for pre-mixing tom mics.
