Default The Zygmont Jazz Trio Quartet Ensemble - Maximal Gladness WIP

Hello folks, how are you all?

Really? Wow, well I hope that clears up with some ointment.

After YET ANOTHER hard drive disaster where I lost all my work, I'm finally trying again. This time, work seems to be going faster than ever but I kinda feel like I'm working in solitary confinement...

Would any of you fine people care to give me any feedback, good or bad, on where this production and writing is going? I'm still writing all the parts, and in the middle of doing the production at the same time, so nothing is set in stone but it would be great to hear some outside thoughts.

All critiques gratefully received...

Just to get things strait.
I don't like modern jazz, free jazz gets me the creeps, but I DO understand why some likes it
I like the attitude, the rythm, the crazyness.
This is the first piece of modern Jazz I ever liked.

I really like it, and I like how it sounds (careful not to over-produce it, it's great as it is IMHO), but it sounds like it is missing a lead melody.

Well. Thats just awesome. Thank you. I'm only about a third of the way through the work I feel I need to do to have this track 'finished'. Hopefully, youll like the finished version too.

Thanks!

The drums are all BFD3. The track was based around a live played midi beat into an arturia beatstep pro for the live jam, and now I am about a third of the way through the drum programming. Do the drums in the first half sound mostly 'live', I'm trying very hard to program the drums to not sound as 'midi' or looped as they would without attention to detail.

Awesome! I'm pleased to hear your thoughts. In fact, the track is an edit of a 30 minute jam. I looped all the parts that seemed to work, converted them into regions, and deleted everything else. That got the track down to 12 minutes. My co-writer then brutally edited down the 12 minutes to 4 minutes with the same region method.

And now I'm making all the transitions between regions work, writing the melodies, programming the drums to fit the track and all while trying to make it sound 'live' and not overly produced or programmed when in fact its nearly all programmed in some way! Phew!

The clarinet and trumpet were recorded here in my home, played by real musicians and recorded by me but those parts in this song are very heavily edited, re-pitched, re-timed and 'programmed'.

I'm giving away my secrets!

Again, thank you all for your responses!

In what place are you thinking a lead melody is needed? The second half? Or the first, or through out the entire track?

The first half. All of the tonal elements sound like support elements, not the main deal. To me, anyway...

Interesting. I shall consider this when I'm next working on the track. Thanks!

This never got any further so it is now declared finished/dead in the water. New video for it tho!

All edited in Reaper but animation is AI generated via Disco Diffusion v5.

Excellent stuff! I really enjoyed it - I don't always enjoy abstract music, but there was a really nice balance between structure, improvisation, and innovative production to keep me fascinated. Nice work!

I felt like I was drifting through a nice quiet field of flowers with birds singing.... While stabbing myself in the face with an ice pick.

Excellent job.

That's a compliment.

Thank you. Not being too much of a fan of total abstraction myself either (I'm not a fan of overplaying either), that sentence is definitely part of what I'm going for with stuff like this. That Ninja Tune version of jazz, mixed with a bit more off the wall/noise/funky abstraction, sounding somewhat improvised (as this was, its a half hour jam cut down to 3 minutes of its 'best bits'), and giving it a musical 'narrative. You hit the nail on the head, and thanks for pointing out that I got near my goal!

Yes! Thanks! I got bogged down in the drum programming so it kinda never got finished, but I think its enough finished to pretend I meant it to sound like that

Again, probably exactly what I was going for, mixed in with a bit of 'well thats how life is, isnt it?' inescapable natural ice-pick vibe I bring

Folks. I'm blushing. Or I would be if I wasnt on heavy medication

Thanks for the comments, really appreciated!

I recommend one dose, twice daily, morning and night.

Side effects are your own concern.

I quite liked it just how it was. I thought it was pretty freaking outstanding.

I like the juxtaposition of real drums (I'm assuming they were) against all the more... I don't know if the digital is the right word but.. modern sounds... ?

I could hear that in like a spy show or movie all day long. Like the TV show Chuck (Zachari Levi and Yvonne Strahovski) that has a bit of lightheartedness to it. You could go either way though. It would fit in a serious, maybe more indy type movie too.

Good job man.

I'm more of a less is more type person. So what you got in there seems pretty full to me. But at the same time sometimes when people fill their stuff chock full it still works. What you did so far works really well to my ear. I like the mix too.

Thank you! That looks like some Basil Wolverton in your profile pic, on the MAD cover. Next video should have a little Wolvertoon influence

More of a less is more, or less of a more is more, more or less.

Thanks to you too! All drums are BFD. The rest is just a Volca Bass (I think thats what he was using), and a Yamaha Reface CS and its onboard effects. Obviously some post production done in Reaper, and recorded straight into Reaper, but I think it was mainly just editing a longer jam down to approx 3 minutes.
