Default Confused about item Gain, Take envelope and general envelope

Hi guys

I have some doubt about this issue with Reaper:
I understand what envelope (i.e volume) works for the tracks (virtually move the fader) the I see gain which is like clip gain in pro tools and it's all fine and I love the waveform changing amplitude in real time.

then I have automation envelope in the item itself - now if I chose volume what does it change? the fader volume (post FX) or the item gain?)
if I change the envelope I see the waveform changing which makes me believe it's a pre FX gain... but would it be possible to have it post FX?
Also what is Take envelope? another kind of automation?

please anyone cn clarify this automation situation in Reaper? I used automation in all DAW since forever and never have doubt but this makes me wonder and makes me realise how many possibilities there are!

There's like seven places to change volume pre-FX and only really one that is that is post. (and the one you've indicated ain't it)

Basically, each of the options applies at different stages in the signal flow.

There is a flow chart on p 114 of your free PDF User Guide which might help you.
