New month, new contest

For the second time this year (the third and last time will be towards the end of the year) there are going to be zero limitations over the plugins you can use. Also, remember that at the end of the year, there are going to be small prizes:

1st prize: Track Inspector (VIP) by Heda + Premium Themes Bundle by Blankfiles
2nd prize: Premium Themes Bundle by Blankfiles

... so try to get as many points as you can from now on if you're interested in getting something for free

This month the song is called My Father Never Loved Me by the band Trafficker, chosen by user aftercutrecords that won in June.

As always you can download the multitrack from the website or clicking on this link.

Happy mixing!
Dave

Thanks!

Not ONLY for this, but I've been procrastinating joining for awhile now, and discovering this contest (thanks to John Tidey) was the motivation I needed to finally sign on...

Yup, I'm in for the first time, too. Really amazed I get the opportunity to learn like this.

Is there a link to the pro version of this track? I can't find a link anywhere, but that's me...

Well, I listened to all 18! Kind of a Hassle but very interesting to listen to different visions of that song...
Incredible too the way it makes things you don't like about your version suddenly jump out!

This was really fun to work on; very Grand-Funk-ish. I dug 1, 6, and 9 the most.

Guys, this month was crazy! The contest got a bit more recognition online and I kept getting submissions after submissions, votes after votes. Many people, but only one winner
This month the award goes to... EpicSounds! Really great mix man You've just earned the right to choose the song for August

August will be back to only stock plugins, so be sure to do that

That's all for now folks! Dave's out

Really enjoyed the contest. Previously I've been checking up on them here and there but thought this month I'd join the forum to participate myself and was surprised to see so many others thinking the same too.

#1 On the percussion your cymbals are quite strong and mid-treble focused. You could trade a little of that for some more top end extension. A bit more kick thump would be a great add too. Verb/delay a bit too strong for my own taste. Overall a natural and nicely balanced sound. Was my #3 vote.

#2 Has a bit of a low-passed top end feeling. Snare transients poke out a bit too much. Vocals could be quieter, and balanced with a midrange cut/maybe treble shelf boost.

#3 Everything kind of sounds tilted toward the left ear--it’s probably worth including a L/R channel swap utility plugin in your workflow to check your spatial balance. That organ bit at the end is a cool touch.

#4 Woah big reverb. Sound kinda cool, though it does sit strangely. The guitars feel very like they’re in a small room in comparison. Also has a bit of a top end muffle to the overall sound.

#5 Loudness war casualty maybe? Your kick has a huge low end, and it gets heavily clipped. The aggressive gating effect only really serves to emphasise that. Guitars sound small and contained, and could do with some panning.

#6 Really pleasant balance on this one. Guitar riffs do sound a bit ‘fluffy’ and could be brought more forward in their presentation. Maybe also just a touch more compression on the vox? Was my #1 vote

#7 Apart from the bass, the balance is sort of reminiscent of my portable Bluetooth speaker. It’s got a very noticeably low-passed sound to it. I think the vocals are a bit loud compared to the instruments, and you could boost the drums a bit too.

#8 This one is mine. I’m fairly happy with how it turned out, but having compared it with everyone else it looks like I should have toned down the top octave a bit? Snare hits have a metallic edge. Bass is a bit sluggish too. Looking forward to seeing critiques.

#9 Feels mid-focused but in a natural way. Guitars stick out of the mix slightly too much. I’m not sold on the pitch-spreading delay effect on the vocals—it’s a bit too noticeably detuned for me. The kick feels a bit lost too. Otherwise, pretty nice.

#10 Strong subs on the kick for this one. Solo guitar is too strongly bandpassed. That vocal delay is pretty neat, but I think it’s a bit too spacey to work with the rest of the mix which is more along the lines of straightforward present-it-like-it-is. I feel like it’s a pretty nice mix, otherwise.

#11 Cymbals have this almost deep-fried sound to them. Since it’s been turned town, it looks like a casualty to the loudness war. Bit of a shame really, there was another almost 7dB of lost headroom to play with, and it seems like it was probably quite decent before the limiting stage.

#12 Oh this one really smacks you in the face and doesn’t let up. Maybe what I’d imagine a mix with OTT on everything to sound like. The super-maximised sound makes it hard to want to listen to for more than 10 seconds imo. I do think the hyper-aggressiveness is a cool texture but moderation would go a very long way.

#13 Drums strike as being kind of pillowy and lacking impact but with an aggressively hot sparkly treble and not so much content in the middle. Vocal treble has a scratchiness to it. Did you accidentally move the rate slider? Time-stretching everything would explain the transient smearing.

#14 Nice clarity. I don’t really like the vocal being off centre and its delay being on the left channel only. It seems like a strange decision. I’m also picking up on a bit of scrunchiness at the second half of the solo. Otherwise it’s a nice natural sounding mix but also quite dark on the top end.

#15 Sounds pretty clean. Kick subs come on a little too strongly and could be dipped lower. 4dB shelf cut at 200Hz brings it. I like it, though maybe could do with more ‘vibe’. Balance is too heavily biased toward the left channel at the solo.

#16 Left guitar is like a busker rocking it out on the side of the road. Pretty cool, though I’m not convinced it fits everything else. Vox could be dropped by a good 6dB. Not sure what’s going on with the drums. They sound kind of weird and wobbly and nearly all the kick thump is on the side channel.

#17 This one has a bit of a midrange focused raw aggression to it, though I think it kind of works. That said, tucking in the presence region and bringing out more punch in the low end would take it to the next level. The comb filter effect at the end feels unnecessary to me.

#18 Vox reverb seems pretty mismatched to the rest of your mix. Super diffuse and otherworldly. The rest of it has a nice smoothness and aggression but does feel overly sweetened. That driven bass is pretty cool. I’m surprised I like it as much as I do. Was my #2 vote

Hey Tiny Tortoise,
thanks for the critique of the contest mixes. Can you help me a little more with your comments.
I was number 7 and clearly I've got a lot of learning to do! ha ha.
I don't own a bluetooth device but I'm guessing it is a more mid range sound? bass and top end thin?

A low-pass sound? No energy up top? I know what a low-pass filter does but not sure what is the characteristic sound you are focusing on. Is it missing the high freq energy or is it getting down to a muffled sound?
Rest of the comments are clear and duly noted.
Thanks again, I can use all the help I can get.

Hey Dyl,
Ah haha the bluetooth speaker. Yeah I probably should have been more clear about what I meant. My speaker is roughly like a band-passed effect but with a little smile curve to it. The top end lacks any sizzle or air, there's a clean and forward sounding midrange emphasis, and the low end boosts mid-bass rather than extending down into subs (i.e. 100-200Hz hump, with reduced low frequency content below 100Hz). It's pleasant and unfatiguing though.

If you check your mix through a spectrum analyser showing average instead of max curve, it'll be pretty easy to spot (if you don't have one, my go-to is Voxengo SPAN). You'll notice that your mix looks kind of like there's a good amount of energy between 2-3kHz and a roll-off starting just above 3khz. It does sound that way too--nice clear midrange but not much up higher. That said, your vocal esses and the shaker track do have more top end extension than any of your other elements, so it's not like a straight up low-pass on the whole mix.

Thanks for the extra info, that's helpful.
I've got Span so I can take a look and work out what's going on there.
Thanks again, appreciate it.
