REAPER CONTEST - MARCH 2019 (FEEDBACK)
__________________________________________________
Well well well... it seems like it's time for another battle! Don't you think?
This month the song is called Still Flyin by the band The Apprehended, chosen by the user aftercutrecords. It's a powerful rock/metal song and I hope you will enjoy working on it!
For some guitar parts you are also provided with a DI track, so if you want to try to come up with a new tone, you are allowed to use any free Amp Sim and external Impulse Responses (if you do, please leave me a note in your submission telling me exactly what you've used). If you've never done anything like this, well prepare to be amazed
That being said, as always you can download the multitrack from the website or clicking on this link.
Happy mixing!
Dave

I'll give everyone my collections for free if it'll save me from having to find a whole bunch of free stuff, and trying to make it sound like what I already like?

It depends if your collection includes paid stuff, because in that case it's gonna be difficult sharing the projects at the end

I've just download the tracks.
In the Metal, the drums are very important, can we use trig?
Because the drums takes are completely missed.
The microphone touches the head of the kick,, there's no attack
the shells are not tuned and it sounds more than amateur...
Same for vocal tuning...
Mixing a song that is not produced is counterproductive and not educational imho.
Would not it be more appropriate to "reproduce the song" by replacing the drums with virtual, tuning the voices and re-amp the DI? and then mix?

Damn I didn't think it was that bad (I didn't really listen carefully to the raw multitrack, my bad). I'll be home in a few hours and if necessary I will change the song.

I used drumtracker to replace all shells with decent sounding samples
I reamed the DI
I tuned main vox
I reamped the main vocals and re-recorded the main vox through a good vocal chain
I can send you the "reproduce" session if you want.

Hm, nearly finished yet. Looked at this session as a challange.
Btw, I used TSE Audio 808 and LePou Lecto for AmpSim, is that ok?

Did you see that tracks 13 to 20 (Guitars) were offset by almost one bar)

That's right, tried to correct it by ear. But maybe it's better we all work with the same stuff. So it could be uploaded again.
I just tried to make the best out of the drums - a bit of work.

I got the files and this is what I'm gonna do...
Drums --> old + new (so people can blend them together or decide to do whatever they want)
Guitars --> DI + reamped
Vox --> new

If noone else has begun with the mix, I would agree in reposting the source files. It would help my mis anyway

I'm going to delete the current multitrack from the website and I'm going to upload the new one as soon as I'm done putting the new one together

Ok I'm uploading the new multitrack on the website. It's much better! Thank you Reno.thestraws
I had to keep the original vocal tracks though, because I think you put some autotune (at least on the main vocals) and there was one specific point where the pitch was just too wobbly to be considered usable. Nice chain though!
I also de-clipped the bass track using iZotope RX. Such a handy piece of software!
What did you use to reamp the DI tracks?

Could we not just include any IR's that I might use with my submission as allowed for Reverb IR's. In which case I could use some that actually sound half way decent?
And if i d/l the sessions at the end of the month, then I would have to go and get whatever free AMP-sim somebody else has used? (if I want to look through their sessions)
(admittedly I'll still probably screw up my mix anyways)
Guess I better set this mix up and have a listen first.....

You can use any IRs, I was referring to the amp sims when I said “free”.
My idea was me providing all the amp sims used in all the projects.
The guitars have been repositioned. The rest sounded ok to me, so anything else you think is off has to be fixed by the individual user. But come on

Rock ON! That's gonna make a sweet little bundle of free amp sims.

The vocals are really near the knuckle and way beyond ready for mixing. There is a terrible noise in the 37_Vox01.flac at around 01:29. Anyone else noticed this?

To me it sounds like his voice is distorting in an unusual way right at 1:28

I agree. I feel like the vocals are going to be the most challenging part of the mix

Sorry everyone! I didn't realize how much of a cluster this song would turn out to be. I heard it, and I liked it haha.
As compensation for the troubles, and in keeping with the idea of fairness for this contest, I'm happy to give everyone a copy of my personal IR's that have been released with a commercial product, but I still have the rights to distribute, if that's cool.
Will be downloading the new tracks momentarily!

So, the person only is allowed to not use Reaper stock plug-ins for amp sims (for this purpose it's allowed 3rd party), for other things only Reaper plug-ins, am I right?

Yes exactly! Reaper has one amp sim and it's called JS: Convolution Amp/Cab Modeler but it's very limited, so I thought it was simply better to reduce the plugins limitation to give you more freedom

Yes. But also any IRs and 3rd-party plugins you used. Follow the guidelines on the website (page “Rules & Download”) to make sure you have everything

Don’t worry haha I think sometimes it’s healthy to work with some kind of raw material because if you can make it sound good then you’ve done a great job

IRs are just simple audio files, so that's easy. For the plugins I honestly forgot that some of them are not just .dll or .vst (or other formats) files, so maybe you're right... in your notes include a list of every 3rd-party plugin you used and a links to download them. Thanks

so was allowed 3rd party audio files? I didn't use anyone, just stock plug-ins and the files provided.
