Default Control Surface: reaper_csurf.dll for 01X users.

***********************
Edit:

The following post is the most recent (11th May 2008) regarding functionality, use of the video reference-manual with set up, etc:

http://forum.cockos.com/showpost.php...8&postcount=13

The video (for this implementation of the 01X with REAPER - including how to set up REAPER to use the 01X) is located here:

http://rapidshare.com/files/11420009...Video.zip.html

Please watch this video before posting if you are having any difficulty getting going as it may well help you solve the problem.

The current '01X with REAPER' software uses the 01X in 'Cubase' mode.

The next version will use the 01X in 'General' mode and will be significantly more powerful than the current version - and no I can't tell you when it's going to be ready as I need to remind myself how it all works again!

end Edit.
***********************
Now that Justin & Christophe have started to open REAPER's control surface handling I've put together a .dll that supports the Yamaha 01X (I know there are a few of us here that use these).

If you want to try it I'd recommend renaming your existing reaper_csurf.dll to (say) reaper_csurf.dll.OLD this wasy it's easier to go back to the original should you want to.

This new file is an edit of the existing REAPER Mackie MCU support - you don't have to change anything in Preferences (or anything at all). Just put the new reaper_csurf.dll into your

Drive:\Program File\REAPER\Plugins directory.

You should do this when REAPER is not running. The next time you start REAPER your 01X should automatically use the new map (as currently you will be using the Mackie map). You don't have to do anything else.

If I get the say-so I'll make it into a specific map (in addition to the Mackie map) in which you'll need to select '01X Control' in Preferences->Control Surfaces instead of the current 'Mackie Control'- but you don't need to worry about any of that at this stage.

I'm having a problem trying to figure out how to implement functions that rely on two keys simultaneously (like the Shift+key, and 'Zoom=on'+key) so there are currently 15 or so extra functions (that could be added/used) that aren't. If I figure it out (any help welcome) then I'll add them as these would be useful additions (including navigation etc).

Using this new map you'll be able to do the following in addition to what your 01X currently does with REAPER:

Key Function
=== ========

> Goto next Transient in Item
< Goto previous Transient in Item

^ Select previous Track
v Select next Track

EDIT Open Item Properties for currently-selected Item

UNDO Edit->Undo

SAVE Save Project
NAME Save Project As...

MARKER + '>>' Goto next Marker
MARKER + '<<' Goto previous Marker

WRITE Write Marker at current cursor position

<< Goto start of Loop (the Jog wheel is quicker for FF/REW)
>> Goto end of Loop
ZOOM Zoom view to Loop/Time-Selection
(BTW 'LOOP' Toggles Loop/Cycle On/Off - this worked already)

F1 Add Track

F2 Show/Hide Docker (shows full track view)

F3 Show FX Chain for Selected Track

F4 Show I/O (Sends/Receives/etc window) for Selected Track

F5 Add Track from Template (mapped here as it is below F1)

F6 Bypass FX Chain for Selected Track

F7 Enable/Disable Record Arm for Selected Track

F8 Cycle Record Monitor choices for Selected Track

PAN/CH PARAM Toggle all tracks Max.Height

DISPLAY ^ Scroll Track View UP
DISPLAY v Scroll Track View DOWN

Remember the above is in addition to what your 01X currently does i.e. You don't lose any current functionality.

I'd suggest you copy the above into the project Notepad until you are familiar wih the functions - or use the text file that's included with the DLL in the download.

I also appreciate that we all work differently and the above mappings may not suit all... I mainly record and work with audio so the above is useful for me.

As stated above if I can get the 'dual functions' stuff working I'll extend the map by around 15 functions (and intend to also include Take handling, Automation Envelopes, etc).

Any comments/problems/etc welcome.

Big thanks go to Xenakios, and SWS, for helping me understand what software I needed to do this, how to set it up, and how get started, Drew for providing the (great) map of functions vs. codes - that saved me a lot of messing about! Thanks fellas! Your help is appreciated!

Issues: Currently many of the functions you can perform do not have a 'toggle' code (within REAPER) - this means that, for example, you'll be able to open a Track FX Chain from the surface but will need to close it manually (instead of pushing the button again). Hopefully Team Cockos will address this sort of thing.

Get it here:

https://stash.reaper.fm/oldsb/99961/01X%20CSurf.rar

I'll get it into REAPER Resources Misc when I'm able to - currently I'm getting an error.

Hope you find it useful.

Next? My Behringer FCB1010 needs to be the playback/recording/looping/take-handling/Punch-in-out hands-free control-monster I bought it for...

Forgot to mention (in case you hadn't noticed)...

Now that REAPER can 'see' these extra keys - each of them can be re-mapped (in Preferences, Keyboard Control section) to any other function you want.

i.e. You don't have to retain the mappings I've set for them.

A newer/better/more-complete version will be out soon-ish.

Dunno... Is it MCU or HUI compatible or something else? What does it use to communicate with the DAW?

Glad you're enjoying it!

If you were wondering... Shift+F1 puts you into Touch Automation mode - try it - and then move some faders (that you have tracks for )

Edit: Be sure to see the note (after NAS' first post in this thread) about remapping the functions to whatever you want (err... whatever is currently map-able anyway!).

Same questions as for yhertogh.
The VS2480 uses MIDI to communicate with the DAW. The documentation is a bit confusing on the topic as it has a 'v-fader' and a 'control surface mode', which both kinda seem to do the same thing. I can provide the midi details if needed.

A question from my side: Does the c-surf.dll allow bidirectional messages i.e. feedback from the DAW to the control surface as wel as controlling the daw with the control surface ? My dream would be to use the VS as a 16 input pre-amp, using the V-fire into Reaper, either recording on the VS, or in Reaper itself, and then using the VS as a fully enabled control surface, with bankswitching, to control Reaper, and vice versa. I know there are a lot of VS users know using/evaluating Reape.

Heehee... funny how my post, when quoted like that, looks like I've agreed to do it!

Regards bi-directional control - yes - my 01X has motorised faders and the faders, and displays, all update in-synch with the project, however I may have misunderstood the question!

Regardless of whether you, me, or anyone else, is/wants to code for a VS whoever it is is gonna need all the info - like all the midi info the VS sends out for a start. It's exponentially more work to write the code than figure out what MIDI messages are generated and required... VS owners are gonna have to supply this info if they're to have any hope of it being included - short of Cockos saying they'll do it for you.

Have you thought about trying to learn how to do it yourself?

First of all, find out how each element of the VS communicates - what each fader, button, and knob, send out - and preferably what each light on the VS needs to receive to illuminate it. That's really the very first step.

If you can find the info in the manual all well and good, if not either contact Roland or do it manually - with MIDIOX or similar.

Want an 01X that's better than your one?

Put this in your \Program Files\REAPER\Plugins directory (you'll then need to select 'YAMAHA 01X' in REAPER's Control Surface menu):

https://stash.reaper.fm/1224/reaper_csurf_01X.rar

Justin, .cpp:

(now in the REAPER build, see SDK)

Here's the video/reference:

http://rapidshare.com/files/11420009...Video.zip.html

The video is a comprehensive 'demo & 'video reference guide' video' (err..) - (it's a collection of eight files, including a README FIRST.txt that tells you which file to run depending on how you want to use the video).

(Basically it's an indexed video in .FLV format (I tried .SWF but that seemed to have a huge memory 'leak'/issue) and works like this: Open '01X with REAPER.html' to run the complete functionality - this will open a web browser, play the video, and provide you with an indexed, and linked, menu for jumping to any command/task instantly.

Once you've watched the video once, you may need to just check how to do a certain action - start the video as above but press Stop, now you can quickly jump to any command just by clicking on the command-name, the difference is that once the command is displayed the video will remain (static) on that view until you either select a different command, press play, or close the video window. (Use this in a minimised window to keep it accessible while using REAPER as very handy quick reference)

If you just want to view the video - without the linkable command-reference - open '01X with REAPER.FLV' (use VLC player or similar).

If you have an 01X you really should get, and keep, this video.)

This 01X map allows you to work a project very quickly - look at the summary of operations below - which are mostly just a single key press.

I've tried to make the layout and 'flow' of the command-mapping as intuitive as possible - watch the video.

I spent a few days building a (much better, IMO) map for REAPER using the 01X in 'GENERAL' mode (as all keys are accessible, in any combination) but couldn't figure out how to update the 01X's display in this mode. I've had open support requests with both YAMAHA Global and YAMAHA UK support for a few weeks but have yet to get a response

If I can get my head around MFC coding I'll release an automated plugin that reflects the control surface functionality and switching options.

Here's a summary of what you can do from the 01X with this control surface mapping:

Use the Jog wheel for:
Normal play cursor scrolling
Project Vertical scroll
Project Horizontal scroll
Project Vertical zoom

Increase/decrease pitch by 1-semitone
Increase/decrease pitch by 1-octave.

All this is really impressive, Deric! And on top of the great programming you also provide a detailed instruction on vid!

I have a question, though. Does Reaper provide feedback to the machine? I have a Behringer BCR2000 and have it hooked up just like you showed in your video. And the inputs from the BCR2000 into Reaper work perfectly but changing sliders in Reaper does not affect the settings of my rotaries. Which would be soooo nice.

earlabs,

you need to run the bcr2000 in mackei mode. there is a preset for mackie control emulation in the files section of the bc2000 user group on yahoo groups. transfer it to the bcr (e.g. with midi ox or with the utility to be found in the same files section).

you will then get feedback from faders, panners and mute, solo and track arm buttons as well as a jog wheel. no feedback from vsts so far.

Default Yammy AW16G ?

I hate to do this, but ...

I wonder how close the Yamaha AW16G is to 01x? I won't even ask the next "logical" qestion ...

But ... as a rider ... Anyone else using this cheap and cheerful device? Would be super to use it as a csurf ;-)

Cheers,

Yes it is fully motorised and REAPER drives it well. I too have a BCR2000 - and was going to do something for it when Justin opens up VST/(i) (plugin) control...

You're welcome

You're gonna LOVE it! really fast project-flow... keep the video (Stopped) in a window until you get used to the layout and just use it as a linked-manual type of thing.

I dunno... I tried to upload it to Resources (misc) but my session kept timing me out (I think) as it took me back to the sign-in page... I don't know what the file size-limit is for Resources but I couldn't seem to upload there (I'd prefer it hosted here as it'd make more sense than on Rapidshare...) despite trying a bunch of times

Hi todd24,

You have:

1. The reaper_csurf.dll as shown in the link below?

2. You've selected 'YAMAHA 01X' from the 'Control Surface' menu in REAPER? (as per the tutorial on the video)

3. Your mLAN channels connected?

Let me know - I can jump on IRC quickly if you like and have a real-time chat about it?

Deric.

Edit. You did watch the video yes?

OK so far.
I had not renamed the csurf dll as you had stated. I did not get the 01x choice in the drop down on the control surfaces.

I fixed that.

Now there are no control surface choices showing up in the dropdown at all. Your csurf.dll file is in the plugin folder.

Scratching my head here.

I have not watched the whole video, but i did watch the setting up part.

Hi,

It should be named:

reaper_csurf.dll

I'm on the IRC (http://www.mixxnet.net/java/index.php) if you still have an issue - just so you know I've set it up on three different machines and haven't had a problem.

If you jump on IRC now I'll try and help sort your issue - but please check the .dll is still named reaper_csurf.dll

Cheers

Deric.

Hi todd24,

You need this file:

You shouldn't have to rename anything... The renaming stuff was for the first 01X stuff I released last month. This stuff is new - the original instrunctions (from the first post in this thread) are no longer valid.

The post (as linked in the quote - in THIS post) is the post you need to be following.

Hope that helps!

Basically - don't rename anything!

Cheers

Deric.

Edit: i.e. The instuctions in this post are the valid instructions:

todd24,

You should have downloaded a .rar file - you should still have that. (reaper_csurf_01X.rar)

A .rar file needs to be extracted - it's a compressed folder.

Inside the compressed folder will be two files:

reaper_csurf.dll

Using reaper_csurf.txt

You should still have this - if not - download it again.

Then JUST put the reaper_csurf.dll into your REAPER\plugins directory (with REAPER NOT running) and start REAPER - voila!

Cheers,
Deric.

Ps. I am on chat now BTW.

Cool.

todd24, I'd suggest (even though I bet you're itching to get going on it!) you watch the video through completely a couple of times to begin with - to get a feel for 'why' I've laid it out as I have... This should help you in the long run.

Oh and remember to keep the video in a browser (in the background) when using REAPER.

Have (super-quick!) fun!

Cheers,

Deric.

@ Justin: This is an /MT-compiled version that todd24 needed to use.

well that would be...really excellent!

be sure to grab bc manager when you are at yahoo, it is the first usable bcr editor and it's really cool. mark van der linden made it recently.

also, be aware that there are 2 mackie presets, a simple one and an extended version.

No... why?

I felt it didn't 'need' it - and besides - I wanted it to be run-able while running a REAPER project - and figured a voice-over unsuitable for that...

Phew! You had me worried there for a minute... (I was thinking "oh, oh... what could be up that he needs an audio explanantion"!)

Yeah - let me know what you think when you've used it for a while Currently I can't think of a control surface that provides this much power and flexibility... including a 'normal' 01X!

Anyway, glad you're enjoying it so far and you've got your problems sorted.

Cheers,

Deric.

Ps. You should see what I made it do in 'General' mode... Almost every major REAPER function mapped onto the surface and all grouped too... Oh well...
