Default 2600k enough? or is 3920k necessary?

I'm looking to run heavy VI's simultaneously in reaper. Includes 2 instances of amplitube 3, impulse loader, superior drummer 2 metal foundry, omnisphere, an orchestra vst, and ampeg svx among various dynamic plugins such as eq's and compressors. Will sandy bridge 2600k be enough?

The more you can afford, the better.

I'm looking at upgrading from my old E4400 Core2Duo to a whole new motherboard with i7-3930K, hex core with HT (12 threads!).

But 2600K is certainly a formiddable CPU which can eat a lot. Perhaps only u-he Diva could bring it to its knees.

im also upgrading from a core 2 duo. im really torn between a 2600k build and a 3930k build. or even a i7 980 build. If i can get away with the 2600k it'll save me about 300 to 400 bucks on the build. but if need more power than that, the 3930k would be the best value. has anyone pushed their cpu's limits with hungry plug-ins?

There's also the i7 3820 quadcore for the 2011 socket. This way you leave open the possibility to upgrade the cpu if the need ever arises. With the 1155 socket, you'll be confined to quad cores. At 285$ it's also a little less then the 2600k, although the motherboards will be more expensive. You'll also have quad channel memory and pci-e 3.0
