any new speakers to beat Equator Audio D5 ?
hi, I have had the Equators for 1 week, I loved them but one HF drive or amp has died. I'll probably get another pair, but has anything close come out recently? They could be a shade bigger but they have to go on a small shelf each. Thanks dave

Plenty out there to beat them, but generally at a price. I would put my The Rock IIs up against just about anything else with 5" woofers but prolly out of your price range.

Well you have the usual suspects in the 5" $500 range
JBL 305
Presonus Eris 5
Yamaha HS5
KRK Rockit 5
Adam f5
But for $600 you can now get the Focal Alpha 50's. I havent tried them myself but the brand's reputation precedes itself.

One week?!
There must be some kind of warranty that takes care of this, right?

I blew one a couple years back, my own fault but the point is I was able to order just one to replace it.

I don't think anything can easily beat Equators in that price range. They sound at least twice more expensive.
Are there any other coaxials for around the same price, even?

Not sure but there is something about them I'm not crazy about, it seems weird being coax but the highs seem a bit disconnected from the lows/mids when comparing to my other monitors. Granted the others are far more expensive so I just use the D5s for remote tracking and/or additional checks on translation in general. ATM, the DynAudio LYD 48s I got a few weeks ago are kicking my butt, as in whatever it sounds like in those, appears to be what it sounds like everywhere.
Don't get me wrong, the D5s are outstanding for tracking and other stuff I use them for but wanted to mention. As it stands now, given the choice, which is not usually the case due to expense, I'd choose three-way over coax.

Karbo: I still have and use my original Tannoy System 6 NFMII coaxial monitors & love them. BUT they do sound so boxy compared to the Rocks. The Rocks sound around 2000GB pounds less boxy!
Having heard the equator`s big brothers when I was looking at buying better monitors, I would take them over anything that focal make. There is something going on in the midrange at the crossover points in every single one of their monitors I auditions & this was back before my hearing fell apart.
Mentioned this to engineers who had some of the really expensive focals in their studios and to a man their reaction was along the lines of " now you mention it...."
Wish I could put my finger on what it is that sounds wrong on them as they are otherwise pretty nice sounding.
@Karbo: Wish I had a slightly bigger room to try those Dynaudios - look like a lot of bang for the buck! Already tried and ditched a pair of 2 ways with an 8" driver as they unerringly found every stray resonance in my room! Cheaper just to add some more focussed sound treatment in the end. And those Rocxks have incredible bottom end extension. I suppose at the price they should have!

After evaluating all my monitors over the years, D5s, Adam, Mackie, JBL, there was always something about them I didn't feel like I could trust - they were all great but... I came to the conclusion the weak point was always the midrange clarity. My current DynAudio 3-ways do appear to solve that, I've not owned monitors that I feel I can trust as much to date.
We'll see how they go but they are the first monitors where it sounds like I expect (based on the material I know I recorded should sound) while in the studio, then sounds the same when I play on other systems. Time will tell.

I hear ya' !
I used to get that disconnected feeling working on urei 413's, which were also coaxial, and generally a very good speaker.
They were a LOT better than the dreaded JBL 4333's where you really had to guess about the midrange, but IMHO the urei 413's were not quite as good as JBL 4311's and 4350's, as far as translating goes.
In the modern world I love my KH310's with KH810 sub but would keep the sub and pair it with ATC SCM25A's if I could afford them.
Very interesting crossover choices:
ATC SCM 2A -- 380Hz/3.5KHz
LYD48 490Hz/5.6KHz
KH310 620Hz/2KHz
I'm surprised the LYD48 4" mid isn't beaming up like a laser at 5k, do you have good imaging in the 2-5 K range ?
Since I built my new control room and got the KH310's things translate very, very well -- Mongo happy

I came very close to getting KH310s, not saying it will never happen either. The imaging seems good so far but I'll keep an ear out just in case.

granted i haven't mixed on a plethora of monitors but you'd have to peel my cold dead hands off of my mixcubes.
(i have an output bass boost which gives them just enough bottom - it's all there.)
had them a while and still not got over how amazing some material (the better mixed stuff) sounds.

That is so weird! Midrange clarity IS the thing people are raving all about regarding D5s! Including Sound On Sound people

Agreed - Found them top be way better than the 120s which to me just sounded like most of the other little boxes. Boxy with artificial-sounding hyped low end.
You would think Neumann could do better, wouldnt you?

Best decision Dave - if you were happy with the sound for the price, why not? Anyone can have a hiccup early on, that is why there are warranties!
