Default MIDI exports double tracks

Ok how do i explain this .... i export MIDI tracks from reaper so that i can import them to MuseScore notation software. Somehow some of the tracks are exported as double tracks. MuseScore reads them like they would be for piano, you know left and right hand, and i dont get how i managed to do that.
The project has 5 tracks, and 2 of them get exported as double. Also, if i import the MIDI back to Reaper, as a new project, the tracks are doubled. Instead of 5 tracks, i get 8 tracks.

Any ideas?

I will attatch the Reaper project file (i wonder if it works) and the MIDI file.

I used "Export project MIDI" and selected "Merge to Single MIDI track"
-- on loading that MIDI file back into Reaper I got 4 tracks (one for each channel) - the (empty) piano track was not exported

I used "Export project MIDI" and selected "Multi-track MIDI file"
-- on loading that MIDI file back into Reaper I got 5 tracks (one for each track)
-- as can be seen in:

Now
(a) in the original the Bank Select and Program Change events are not always on the same MIDI channel as the Notes,
(b) I did not see any duplicated tracks
(c) in the first save, the click track got corrupted - all the notes were turned into Bank Select and Program Change events !Bug!
(d) I imported the 2 MIDI files that I exported into another DAW and got very similar results; again no duplicated tracks.

On further investigation I think that the problem is those Bank Select and Program Change messages. If I drag your MIDI file into Reaper and select separate Reaper tracks for each track in the file and for each channel I get 8 tracks: As can be seen in:

If we ignore the empty Piano track, that gives us 7 - which may well be the ones you see in MuseScore. Edit those Bank Select and Program Change messages in the MIDI Editor /Event List and change their channels to the correct ones.

Phew!

Thanks again DarkStar for having all the trouble

I didnt even try to export it to a single MIDI track, but i tried it now and funny that Reaper takes it back as 4 track, like you said ... but MuseScore ... it imports it as 3 tracks and a lot of messy notes, lol.

How do i do that? i mean how do i see if and when the program/bank changes are on different channels? I tried (like you showed to me last time) to delete all program changes, but it didnt help.

Oh and BTW, when i import this to FruityLoops, it imports just fine, 4 tracks, (it ignores the empty piano track) but one track is named MIDI OUTPUT.
When i export that MIDI from FL and open it in MuseScore, it is like it should be, and even the tracks have correct names ... but they are in double, like ... the one i inserted in Reaper and the one from GM bank.
So, FL kind of removes all those bank/program changes when it exports it.

I could just sweep this under the carpet, and keep exporting via two programs, and then open it in MuseScore but because thats not me, i wanna find out what makes this happen.

Just to show you how it looks on MuseScore...
This is how it looks when exported from Reaper

and this when first imported to FruityLoops and then exported...

There are 3 clips (Trumpet, MIDI OUT (Sax) and the CLICK that need editing:
  • Open the clip in the MIDI Editor, then switch to View Mode: Event List,
  • Select all the events (CC, PC and Notes) on the 'wrong' channel,
  • Right-click and select the desired channel

For the Sax track, the Reaper track name is "Tenor Sax", but the track name data within the MIDI clip is "MIDI OUT", so that it what it gets exported as. Open the clip in the MIDI Editor, go the Event List, double click the name and edit it.
