Default How to automatically convert files to .wav when importing

Hi Everyone !

I'd like to know if there is a way to convert audio files automatically when importing them into Reaper.

For instance, if I drag and drop an .ogg file from the media explorer to the edit window, I'd like it to be converted instantly as a wav file in my project folder.

Can Reaper do that ?

Hi

It can't be done by drag/drop.
Batch process all to WAV then import them.
Reaper > File > Batch file/item converter

It can be done but not on initial import. You can use the File -> Consolidate / Export Tracks option after pulling tracks into your project to make copies in the project directory and also convert them all to a particular format.

The most important part of this is to select the option Update Project with consolidated tracks (see attached image). This will make sure you are using the converted wav files instead of the original source files.

Is it just me or is this a little strange? I know that Reaper read all those files at the same time, hence no need to convert on import. For me, coming from other DAWs that need to convert all files, this behaviour is more normal and I would feel better having them all in one format.

Does anyone know if drag and drop converting when importing a file in the project window is planned to be possible soon?
After working and optimizing my Reaper workflow every day for 3-4 years I assume this could be a reason for several performance and latency issues.
Cheers

I doubt it has any significant impact on performance, unless we are talking about old (e.g Pentium 4) CPU or very large orchestral templates with thousands of long and/or multichannel audio files.

I would say that more important is the speed/cache/fragmentation of the disk where the files are streamed/read from. There will always be balance between uncompressed (but large files) and compressed (lossless or lossy, but smaller files). You need a bit more CPU to decompress on the fly, but you need to have broad and sustained hardddisk bandwidth for big, long uncompressed samples.

And I am pretty sure that latency is not affected by that at all.
