I don't know. When you upload it to the music site? When you sell the 1st cd out of the boot of your car? When the King of Norway announces it at the United Nations?

I guess when it publicly becomes available for sale or download.


That oculd be announced at a concert, podcast, just a website upload/update. newsletter. anything. there's no set rules on this

remember that even if it's recommendable and good practise to register your tracks something is copyrighted the moment you created and even if you only release in your was stream it can be considered a "release" or public communication. Ex uploading in youtube etc. The other thing is an official release, then for the "single" or for the final album, usually your label (or yourself if you make your own really one) will set one date for promotional purposes, it's good to plot and plan this point to be able to announce, contact press, and so forth and to have cd in stores (if you have distribution) and already sent to some press for some first bunch of reviews. That is why many artists know the release date prior, they also can set up teh digital itunes to make the material available one certain day, thus the "official release" date. You usually also put that "official" date in the album epk onesheet but then the components themselves may have been shared before (some of them) in order to create expectation
