Default recording midi track from Midi Guitar 2

I am running Midi Guitar 2 into Reaper 5.978 on MacOS. Guitar is plugged into Focusrite USB interface. It works well with minimal latency when set as an input FX sending midi to a VST as an output FX on the same track. Playing massive string and vocal choirs from the guitar is quite extraordinary. Reaper however does not seem to want to record the midi when I press record.

Other track settings are:
Record: output:midi
Monitor:input
Input: mono

What am I doing wrong?

thanks

or perhaps the track FX is "eating" the MIDI before it gets a chance to be recorded at the output? Right click on the output box of the fx / MIDI output / & try "merge with MIDI bus" (instead of "replace MIDI bus")

on the track that has MIDI GTR on it, set it to recored Output\MIDI

and if you want you can also send that to another track, which is also set to record Output\MIDI

you will likely need to hit the F3 key to 'all notes off' when you stop

also if you are sending the midi to another track, you can set the MIDI GTR track to 'recording disabled monitor only' to not get the midi on that that track
