Default Vicious cycle

This one is written by a friend who came over last week, initially just to put down some accoustic guitar to a click so he could then work up the rest of the song.
But we ended up with this

What do you think ?, song, mix etc,

The singing is very pitchy in places i know , right at the edge of my range. But my mate has a singer friend and he is most likely putting the vocals down for it soon.

EDIT: sorry having a problem with the link, will upload soon.
EDIT: working now

EDIT No 2: Here is the latest mix http://www.box.net/shared/cm7laudn4a

I like the song a lot and the mix is very good. You've got a nice sliding double-stop hook between verses. I think that a simple 3 or 4 note guitar licks bracketing the phrases in the verses could really lift this song to the next level - perhaps something like Neil Young might do. By the way, I find the vocal to be quite appealing even though you are pushing your range limits.

Great stuff mate. I think the drums and bass are sounding great and the song is very good. I agree with T that you could rustle up more hookiness from the guitar.
I think I would like to hear the electric split into lead and rhythm parts with a sharper more compact sound on the rhythm. If I might be hyper critical I think that the guitar parts could be a little more sharply played timing wise.

Great song, I think it sounds great as well, as far as the vocals I think they fit the song, kinda Tom Petty like. Good job.

Thanks for listening, and for the encouraging comments, I'm sure we'll be doing more work on this song so i'll see if i can come up with some guitar hook in the verses.

Thanks spike, this is one of the first mixes where I can say that i'm actually happy with the Bass sound , yey!!! at last.

AFA the guitar timing, are you refering to the accoustic or electric parts, or both ?

very nice hook! I imagine some background chorus and some more instruments like a B3, at least here and there.
Concerning the "telephone voice" at the end: I would either exaggerate it to alienate it even more or do without it.

Cheers,

really cool song. I am listening on headphones (middle of the night here).
What I notice is that the electric is quite louder than the acoustic. it sounds a little unbalanced this way, at least on headphones (AKG K 271 MK II)

I like the vocals the way they are. No need for perfection here !
Yet I would love some backing vocals on this one. that would make the chorus take off even more.

liked it - out of the John Lennon "working class hero" influence
comparisons aside, it stands on its own as a song - the singing fits well with the feel
i'm too new at computed recording to comment accurately on the recording although in this song
under produced rather than over produced

Thanks for listening.

RE: the accoustic/electric balance, is anyone else hearing the accoustic to be too soft ? I wonder if its my listening enviornment.

Thanks for your thoughts

Well i'll take under produced rather than over produced any day
The fact you thinks it stands on its own as a song is very satisfying.

Thankyou

Thanks again to you all.

I just listened to this Wolfie, and I didn't read any other posts, so I'm not influenced, I'll do that in a minute.

Great song, fantastic performance and recording.

The guitar is a bit loud and the solo needs a bit more support I feel, but overall i get the feeling it's actually a bit too tight. Either that or there isn't much to distract one in the areas of roughness. I know that sounds nuts but I am thinking it's a shade short on the organic side. I'm thinking more "feedbacky spacious" type guitars - I don't mean like reverb, but maybe you could try spreading the geetars with very short delay to get more spread - just a thought

That's just how I like things and I already know we don't have the same tastes in production.

Another thing I might try is to put another (messed up and not very loud) guitar behind the solo and take the solo level down. I think I would try and get a bit more room sound and drop the drums a tad too.

Vocals are sounding top notch

As other have said it's a good catchy song and a good overall sound/performance.

The guitar hook is good. Going along with what Spike said, I wonder whether the lead guitar could be more sharply played. Also, perhaps less 'straight' - I'm not even sure what I mean by that , but I'm thinking of something along the lines of a Mark Knopfler'ish feel.

Catchy tune, Wolffman. It's got a great, driving along a dusty desert road kind of feel to it. Lots of cool hooks. In my mind, I can hear some kind of vintage keys in the background. Something like a Hammond maybe?

Looking forward to more.

Ted, Pete & fishy, Thanks for having a listen and posting your thoughts, i really appreciate it !!

I've had a little time to get back to this and have a second go at the mix, taking into account the tips posted by everyone in this thread.
I hope i've addressed most of the issues ( except for maybe the guitar timing, i didn't play it again but i did try to straighten it up some )

i've posted the mix in the 1st post, I tried to mix it a little less agressively if you get my drift.

I did have a go at some gritty hammond organ but i totaly suck at keys, SO,
if anybody wants to play some keys on this " GO FOR IT ", I think it would really help the song.

Please let me know if the new mix is going in the right direction , or not

Cheers

Oh, most certainly in the right direction and already most way down the road - this sounds great!

My only mix thought now was whether the vox could use just a tiny amount of what the lead guitar has on it (verb and delay I guess) just to put it a bit of the same space and tuck it into the mix. Just a tiny tad mind, not so it is "wet" but just so that it sits back a little.
Just a thought.
But mainly this is sounding really great and, yeah, very catchy.

Hi all

So, as i said in the OP my mate has a singer friend and they have been back and we did some more tracking, 2nd elec guitar, new vocals ( not me this time ) and some banjo, i think that was all.

I have been tinkering with the mix for a while and think i've got it close to finnished.

Its in the OP, EDIT No 2.

Feedback welcome.

Cheers
