Ok, apologies for the serial posting.
I think I may have it working! Some googling led me to this avid knowledge base page about an old permissions issue. The new MacOS versions won’t easily let you change permissions on the suggested global library folder, but on a whim I tried changing the same permissions on the equivalent USER library folder, and it seems to have done the trick!
So I'm in Mackie mode, Reaper and the MC Control are definitely talking to one another, and the performance is nice and snappy. Adding and removing tracks Feels VERY fast compared to native.
I can't quite figure out what's going on in the MC Control screen - The top row of squares seems to correspond to my tracks, and it shows mute and record enable status, which is cool. Beyond that, I'm uncertain what I'm seeing on the screen. I can see numbers 1-7 on the row below, then nothing below that, and 1-4 below that, but I have no idea what they signify.
I can't seem to get the soft keys or touchscreen buttons to generate any MIDI data, but I can get them doing keystrokes, so provided I have keyboard shortcuts configured in Reaper, I can use the touchscreen on the MC Control to fire off commands. A bit kludgy, but useful enough.
I also can't seem to get much action from the soft knobs apart from pan. Is there any way to get plugin or aux control? Perhaps not...
So I think it's working? Is this what Mackie Control mode looks like?

Great news !!
Are you using the stock plugin, Klinke, or CSI.
Yeah, the track layout on the Control touch screen is fairly weird, I mostly ignore it.
To get the soft keys working, start Reaper, then:
EuCon->EuControlSettings->Softkeys tab:
Push the "Command" button
Add a softkey:
If you can figure out how to export them (I couldn't), I'll send you my set of 5 mapped pages

Just stock for now - AFAIK Klinke isn’t available for MacOS (unless I missed something again?). I should check out CSI though - just read through the thread and it looks promising!
EDIT: Ooh and I just stumbled across the Moss plugin which also looks good. So many choices!

Cool... I can definitely live with it, so long as it’s not emplematic of a deeper problem.

I did find that, but it was mapping to Reaper actions (and custom actions) I couldn’t find. Thankfully the “key” section lets me assign keyboard commands which works around that OK

Thank you, I’ll take a look. It shouldn’t take too long to roll my own anyway...
Now I just need to decide between the response speed of MC emulation or the feature set of native... decisions decisions! Although considering touch sensitive faders was my main goal, I’m definitely across the line And I suppose I could always jump between protocols - MC for tracking and Native for mixing perhaps...
Thank you so much for your help. I was surprised and disappointed this thread didn’t get more traction back in the day. I realise all this Mackie talk has veered off topic a bit, but hopefully the info in the posts can help someone else out in the future

Help me. I installed "EuCon alpha" but the edit (moving faders, playback in Reaper, and others) began to happen with high latency. It became very uncomfortable to work. What could possibly be the matter?
OSX ElCapitan
Plugin: Waves, PowerCore platform (TC Electronics), Cokos
Hardware: MAC PRO 3.1, built-in sound card
In an empty project, everything works fine.
UPD: Just noticed a peculiarity: it is a high latency in the work begins to manifest itself when I try to use the synths from the TC PowerCore platform.

Is the latency still there if you remove EuCon from Control/OSC/Web and run PowerCore ?

1. Session is empty. Work normal.
2. I load any VST plugins. Work normal.
3. If I load a virtual synthesizer from the TC Electronic platform, then delays in faders, playback and all other moments begin.
4. If I remove EuCon from Control/OSC/Web and run PowerCore, the program works fine.
This happens exactly when loading plug-ins of virtual synthesizers from TC Electronic platform.
I made a video, it might be easier to understand.

Howdy EuCon folks
Anyone else encountering sluggish video playback while using EuCon? I'm on MacOS, latest versions of all software...

Eucon
So, I'm a long time PT user (and ex-Avid specialist) that is deep into Euconese, and trying to make my life easier with the Reaper transition. I'm on OSX, so what files do I need to attempt to Euconize Reaper? Is there a guide for installing the hacks to make it roll?
I'll be attempting an Artist Mix & PTC app, and if it's workable, I'll try my Dock & S3 eventually.
I realize I could search for all this, but not going too scour thru 10s or hundreds of pages for the straight poop. I can probably answer some Qs about eucon stuff here, but either way, thx in advance.

Cool, welcome, I was the developer on this project.
To download the software: https://stash.reaper.fm/v/18477/EuCon%20Beta.zip
Here are the installation instructions for Mac (from the readme.txt in the download):
[edit]You can get to the right folder by going to Action->Show Action List... then type in resource path -- select that line (probably the only one in the list) and press the Run button at the bottom and you're there.[/edit]
Place reaper_csurf_eucon.dylib in the appropriate folder
e.g. user/Library/Application Support/REAPER/UserPlugins
Place the EuCon folder in the same directory as Reaper.ini
e.g. user/Library/Application Support/REAPER
Go to Options->Preferences->Control Surfaces and press the Add button.
Select EuCon from the drop-down and press OK to dismiss the dialog.
Press Apply and OK to dismiss the dialog.

Great, glad it's working.
Meanwhile, since you offered Euconese knowledge...
Here's an ancient demo of what we're working on now -- the stuff in my sig: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ravhFzHcYKI
Some Avid Artist series controls don't generate midi messages under the Mackie Control protocol, was hoping to find a file where those mappings are defined so that I could expand functionality to include those controls, no luck so far, you know anything of said definitions ?

I have been testing with an S3 and Pro Tools Dock and is (generally) working extremely well. Sure there are a few weird bits but its a alpha/beta. Excellent work Geoff.
But what is the future of it? I notice it hasn't been updated for quite a while. What is the future of Eucon in the world of Reaper?

Up to the good folks at Cockos of course, but I personally don't anticipate any further work on this.
In the meantime, check the (insanely long) thread in my sig below for the latest project, don't know how much we can do with the S3, depends on how Avid did the MCU emulation (if they did it at all) , the Mix and Control were reasonable, the Transport did everything but map those 2 gorgeous wheels, go figure.

Hey guys,
I can see that the latest version was several years ago.
So EuCon support has been abandoned ?
Thanks

Of course, it's up to the good folks at Cockos, but I haven't heard anything indicating any future work.
Meanwhile, I'm using 2 Mixes and a Control in Mackie mode, along with a Console1 with the new project mentioned in my sig below.
Here's a short demo from over a year ago, it's much better now:

Mackie mode vs EUCON mode
Please let me know if I have got this right:
I have an Avid Artist MIx control surface, and have installed the EuControl 19.5.1.44 and EUCON Worstation v4.4.1z44 software (both downloaded from avid.com).
I have got this to work with Reaper 5.979 to some level by using the Mackie Control Universal. But some functionality is not working, e.g. the Solo buttons does not light yellow when press (though the track is soloed), and the channel and insert modes does not work either.
Do I have to use the EUCON alpha (beta?) software to have the missing functionality working? If yes, do I then still use Mackie mode?

You can either use Mackie mode or the EuCon alpha with EuControl in native mode but not both.
I would try to use the Mix in native mode using the EuCon alpha and see what you get.
The new project (CSI) that I'm working on provides another approach using Mackie mode, but it isn't as good as EuCon alpha if you only have a Mix.

Thanks a lot, Geoff!
Yes, the EuCon beta works better (you said alpha, but you meant beta?). The solo button now lights up, and the channel mode for INSERTS and AUX works pretty well for VST plugins (but not for JS plugins it seems).
The Configuration Pages (CFG) for e.g. the Aux knob set assigns aux sends to a track does not work. Not a big deal.

... but the EuCon causes Reaper to slow down and eventually hang, so I have switched back to Mackie mode again. Is the slowdown/hang problem a known issue with EuCon? Are there any tricks to avoid it (downgrade EuCon version, some config settings to tweak etc.)?

Thank you!
I just wanted to offer Geoff a huge thank you for his efforts. I have the EuCon Beta working with Reaper 5.982 on Mac High Sierra in native EuControl mode and it works very well with my Euphonix MC Control, MC Mix, and my old iPad using Pro Tools | Control simultaneously. I'm currently building a Touch Screen key map to add on to the already great implementation (a la Repear Add New Track, etc, Marker selection, etc.)
EuCon support for Reaper, regardless of whether it is official, not official, etc. is a fantastic addition to a remarkable and affordable DAW like Reaper.
I am a intermediate level programmer and I'm offering any help you might need beta testing or even just compiling / checking new builds on either Mac or Windows platforms in the future just to keep this tool "going" along side future builds of Reaper.
Thanks again.

Cool, thanks, you might also check out the latest project in the sig below.
I'm currently using a Control, 2 Mixes, a Console 1, and iPhone/iPad, working well, and very customizable.
Also, a lot more snappy, generally

I discovered that my two intallations of Reaper - on two different PCs, shows different versions of the Mackie Control. One shows Mackie Control (dev 7.8) and the other shows Mackie Control (dev 3.4). Both installations are updated to the latest versions of Reaper. How do I get the latest version of the Mackie Control Universal?
BTW, I installed the Klinke Mackie Control plugin, and that appeared to solve the Solo button problem with Avid Artist Mix (the solo buttons didn't light when pressed).

Check your Midi ports on the 2 installations, bet they are different, I think that is I/O not versions.

I've been reading through this thread and I'm trying to make my Artist Mix work in Reaper but the controller doesn't seem to talk to Reaper at all.
I have the alpha pack installed as the instructions say on PC and I see that CSI in my Reaper prefs trying to connect to my Artist Mix, yet my artist mix controller is not seen by Reaper. I feel like they are not talking to each other.
I have:
-reaper 6.0 on PC
-alpha CSI installed according to instructions
-artist mix
Any ideas what I may have missed?
Thanks in advance

You're using the CSI alpha. I'd recommend you don't use that for an Artist Mix. If you have an Artist Mix, download the Eucon software here:
https://stash.reaper.fm/v/18477/EuCon%20Beta.zip
Follow the instructions, then install it as a Eucon controller in the Preferences -> Control Surfaces screen. Not as a CSI controller.
At least in my experience, using the EuCon beta works great and makes EuCon plug and play. The only downside is Reaper will get a little slow after you remove a track. Apparently the entire surface needs to be rebuilt, so there's like a two-second lag when you remove track from your project. Worth it.

EuCon will soon be supported in CSI, please ask any questions there.
Setup will be via a "build your own EuCon console" interface

New builds are up.
Yup, time for an early EuCon "Shakedown cruise"
For EuCon, you need dlls/dylibs from both links in the sig below.
Then, just fire up CSI config, and set up your EuCon -- accept defaults at first if you are not sure.
Channels, Pan and Transport should work fine.
Sends/Auxes are totally broken, but you can push Auxes and see something on the displays.
Any brave souls out there ?

Hi Geoff,
I am back after six months and its time for round two of trying to move to Reaper from Tools as my main system. If you recall use a S3 and Euphonix Transport, and I did give CSI a go last time but we had some issues like Faders out of whack and very limited support for the surface's displays and buttons / encoders.
I am eager to give this another go and see how it goes.
Cheers, tdc

Hey Geoff,
Just gave the latest beta build a go on a portable install and managed to get the S3 running in Reaper without too much issue.
The faders on the surface now match the levels in Reaper, as opposed to having a 3dB offset like they did last time I tested this.
A few observations / questions that I am sure are obvious to you.
- No meters on the S3 surface?
- Only a very small set of buttons work on the S3. Is there a way to intercept their messages and then map those to custom actions in Reaper?
- How do we handle S3 Layouts using this? Large mixes rely on switching layouts 100's of times a day.
Thanks for your work - its really coming along.

Hi. Is this still alive? Can I help? I have AVID Control app and planning to buy S1 and Dock. I have installed Eucon for Reaper from somwhere else but it only plays transport and metering not EQ or Dinamycs or Plugins? Where can I download it? How can I help?

It is still alive, though Geoff doesn't have a ton of time. Main thread is here (the one you're on)

So many similar threads, when it comes to the hard work Geoff has put in with EuCon... but, here's my immediate thoughts after obtaining Avid Artist Mix, and a Euphonix MC Transport... this will save anyone time, if you're thinking of doing the same.
Was a little tricky to get working at first, but, it works. I'm on Windows 7, 64-bit. I installed the EuCon Workstation Unified Installer thing (latest build, I guess, 2023.6), which I had to create an Avid account to download. The link is here:
https://my.avid.com/esd/Product/Information/113
Installed the program, made sure Artist Mix was set to the Default DHCP setting, and connected it through a little hub, as I didn't have an ethernet crossover cable handy. You have to open Windows Control Panel and find the EuControl thing, and "Add" your Artist Mix to the right side, when it shows up in it (you'll see what I mean, when you open it).
Artist Mix capabilities (using Geoff's EuCon Control Surface script, same thing he linked in the first post in this thread):
- Faders for tracks (banking by 8, and 1 by 1 as well)
- Track names (and numbers)
- mute ("on") and solo (and a solo light, which Mackie Control Universal does not do)
- track select
- track record arm
- switch applications (ALT+TAB) using "Workstation Application" button
Annnnnd, that's it. Yeah, it's cool, indeed. There's a little lag... especially when adding tracks... but once they're there, you're good.
Euphonix MC Transport capabilities
- numpad zooms horizontally (not vertically)
- you can nudge items left or right
- you can move items by grid size, left or right
- you can move items up/down to different tracks
- you can assign the softkeys to Reaper Actions, or change the Numpad keys to different actions
- the jogwheel and shuttle do nothing at all, but I think you can assign them using EuControl
Ultimately, it's usable. Especially Artist Mix. I didn't try two side by side, but I think they do 1-8, 9-16, etc... Geoff and others mentioned this everywhere.
Here's the thing though, that Geoff pointed out-- other surfaces do things easier, with more customization... USB, plug n play, or MIDI I/O, from the Mackie Control Uni to X-Touch Universal.
And, my massive Reaper/MIDI controller Mapping Project from 2019-2020:
https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=219429
It's easier to assign encoders and buttons to Reaper Actions, than to mess with this whole Avid ecosystem, which, let's be real... is not really ideal.
And all the end-of-life stuff, that happens constantly with Avid. Overpriced products, then blown out for $5, then gone.
I do still like Artist Mix A LOT... I love the form factor and the screens are lovely... the used price is very fair and you can find them all the time. But... yeah. The ethernet thing is annoying... and the fact you cannot simply assign unused buttons to Reaper functions...
And one more huge complaint about Artist Mix-- the arm track and track select buttons are right at the 0.0db point... which is where the faders usually sit! Bad, bad design choice on Euphonix's part, and Avid should have known better when they rebranded it and made the color scheme more uniform. Thankfully, you can touch the fader cap for track select, which is nice... but, when you want to arm the track, chances are, you will bump the fader on the right, or the left of the button (previous track) thus, screwing up your mix.
Behringer's X-Touch may be a little uglier, and MCU might be huge and old whatever, but... they're more customizable, as others have pointed out.
Will I be hanging onto my Artist Mix pair? Yes. For Pro Tools and Logic, it seems a lot more usable, as everything is right there. But, I'm on a Reaper forum... so, I prefer Reaper (I do have a Mac as well in my studio-- when I get more familiar with Pro Tools, I'll probably move the Artist Mix stuff to the Mac, and rock an X-Touch Universal for my PC). Or maybe I'll keep the Artist Mixes for Reaper, I don't know. Depends on the room on the desk.
Lots of thoughts. Thank you Geoff for your hard work... and, I totally agree why you would become so frustrated with Avid, to the point of selling all your Artist Mixes, Controls, Transports, etc.
The path of least resistance is a path so few of us follow.
