Paul -
Just downloading now. So, obviously haven't had a chance to mess w/ it yet. But if it's done anywhere near as well as your very thorough and well assembled web-page, this is gonna' be good. Thanks for your generosity.

Thanks Mike, you've done a great service to the community! Newbies should take note that this is a very capable library well worth installing even if they plan on going further.
I found your "How To" guide quite interesting and very well presented. It's worth viewing for anybody using virtual instruments...

I should clarify that Mike Verta, not me, made the video using a different sample library but the technique for using my library is the same which is why I link to his video from my web site.

My plan was simply to answer as many questions as I could before they needed to be asked, and to provide the kind of documentation I would want if I stumbled across this library.

Virtual Playing Orchestra 3.1
This Download by Paul Battersby needs revisiting.
I had a messy play with it in the past but it has improved hugely.
The main thing that makes it one of the best is the explanations that Paul has added. This is very like Reaper.
It is one thing to have a bit of software but like any instrument, tool, car or machinery learning the 'mechanisms', strengths and the limitations are what makes music software sublimely magical and ...well..playable.
Knowing that you are not Hendrix or Tchaikovsky but can still keep a bar room full of happy revelers entertained for a while by doing a few guitar licks or the Marseillaise or 1812 on a 'keybard' is as close to Nirvanah as many of us will ever get.
Ok I am going back to see where I can hard pan and soft pan some of the VPO magic.
Gratitude in gallons.

I don't know when you first tried it but there have been a lot of changes since the first release.

actually I guess it is sforzando
OK but then I'm lost as to how to organize the sfz files and the wav files so that a loaded sfz automatically finds the wav files it should be using...
HALP?

Mine has everything in parallel directories... there's directories called strings, brass, etc. that have the sfz files, a dir called libs which seems to have the actual samples, a dir called documentation... all in one master dir, Virtual-Playing-Orchestra3. This was the default result of unpacking all to the same dir for me and worked right out of the box.
If you're not getting this structure when unpacking make sure in whatever compression manager you're using that you are using the option to preserve dir structure, but usually that's default.
Hope you enjoy! I sure did.

Hopi -
Contents of my Virtual Playing Orchestra folder:
Brass
Documentation
Keys
libs
Percussion
Strings
Vocals
Woodwinds
Just "import" into SFZ by opening the folder containing the, say "Strings" samples and double-clicking within the "Strings" folder on whichever *.SFZ articulation you desire.

thanks guys.... maybe I unpacked them badly cuz I have a Samples folder of the wav files that then has many sub folders, each one of those seems to be where the samples came from [which collection]
so I'm really lost...
If anyone has the time I'd like to see what your folder structure looks like

Yah, I think that would break it right there, the VPO default install I have the folder with the samples is called "libs" so I'd assume that's what the sfzs are expecting. I assume that's to fit into your existing sample library setup?
I'd just start over, following the instructions from the website to unpack everything to the same place and making sure the default structure as seen in RM's posts is established. This actually should be done by default by simply unpacking the downloads to the same folder. Once you have it working then you can work on integrating it into your setup. Good luck, rock on!

OK getting better... but now a question:
because there are two diff sets of the sfz files, one for standard and one for performance... how do we keep them both as possible instruments to load and yet keep them separate in the folder structure?
if we extract to the same location, one of them will overwrite the other...
so if we want to have as possible, the standard and also the performance sets... how to do that???
OH never mind I think I see how now
Yep got it ...all good and thanks very much for your help... I would have gone NUTZ with out it!

For anyone else with the same question, the answer is that extracting the standard and performance sets to the same location will not cause them to overwrite each other. The files are named to prevent that. You might be asked by whatever you are using to unzip the files, if you want to overwrite, but that is because there are common directory names. Nothing actually gets overwritten so when asked if you want to overwrite, say yes.

@pbattersby I am confused. Does your library cover all the needs or it is better to use source orchestras as well to get the best result? Thanks in advance.

That depends. What are "all the needs"?

Do you mean is it better to use the samples from their original source before I copied them? I've done a lot of processing on the samples. I've adjusted the tuning, removed any noisy samples, looped the samples, balanced the volumes, ensured each instrument covers it's correct range of notes, manufactured articulations when necessary. I guess you'll have to listen to instruments from both my library and the original source to decide which sounds better to you and perhaps combine what you like best from each library (which is what I did to create my library)

Sorry for that, I should ask more precisely.

Thanks for the response!
What I mean is did you choose the best instruments among the bunch of them? Like there were 3 pianos and you chose the best one (in your opinion) and you did it with all the instruments. Am I right? If it is true, then it should cover all the needs. So it's like to have all that source libraries.

Yes. I started with what I thought were the best free libraries that use the sfz format. I then went through and did a side by side comparison of each instrument to decide which instruments from which libraries I thought were the best. I then took those best instruments and went through each .wav sample performing any processing I felt was necessary.

One of the Best Structures for Some of the Best Sample sets.
I must confess to being no great expert at this area.
For centuries composers have been trying to re-create orchestras with keyboards. To even achieve by making something takes both great sound and superb structure.
This structure is well on the way to that holy grail; it takes organisation and data-basing. We can now select the sample sets with the articulations we like even if we cannot play every instrument in the orchestra a la virtuoso performance. With the right sounds and structure we can either re-create or make something new and innovative musically.
A lot of the other high priced orchestral ones have a movie soundtrack uniformity even though there are some great players. It is hard to get the balance right for a variety of articulations and phrasing but still allow it to be playable by humans with a musical brain that is not as big as that of Ludwig Von Beethoven.
Virtual Playing Orchestra has the potential to create very individual music because of the structure and the variety of sources for the sounds.
