The German 'genial' is etymologically linked to genius, Justin.

And the "guardian spirit" meaning of the Latin 'genius' seems as appropriate for Justin... Genial Audio Recording and Editing Software... how about that? Gives it the HUMAN touch.
BTW Appropriate Audio Recording and Editing Software isn't that bad either, since "Appropriate technology is technology that is most appropriate to the environment and culture it is intended to support" as they say.

... so long as we don't get up people's noses by excessive plugging and over-enthusiasm, of course. (But how can one be overenthusiastic about something so wonderful and life-changing as Reaper? Ooops, there I go....)

Justin,

Scott Garrigus (Sonar/Sound Forge Power author) has just reformatted his DigiFreq forum. It now includes "Official and Unofficial" MFG forums.

http://www.digifreq.com/digifreq/discuss/default.asp

Maybe you want to start an official forum before I/others start an unofficial thread.

Good dudes there.

i posted about the goodness of reaper after my own testing of reaper in the music computers section at gearslutz....and i was surprised to find its been made a sticky.

of course no matter how good reaper is ....some folks i'm sure will refuse to believe one can do just as good a song in reaper as other products costing lots of money.
i just make my own independent judgements.
and in my opinion reaper is the best thing to come along in a very long while.

Strange, how REAPER appears to be close to non-existant in a very large audio recording forum I just visited: http://www.recording.org/forums.html

It appears to be a forum focused on indie music/musicians, and I would think that REAPER is the kind of software that will get a warm welcome in indie music culture. It's a weird sensation for someone like me who's only frequenting this and the KVR forum when it comes to audio to discover such non-existance, because at KVR/Hosts I really get the impression that REAPER is already at the center of attention, as it should be.

How come then that it's so invisible in some other large forums? Anyone got ideas? It really amazes me. And I don't like it

There sure is a big world to conquer for a 1 MB app....

Do you post there? It might be very interesting to start a thread asking what is restraining people's awareness / enthusiasm.

Thing is, though, that if people have invested large sums in other apps which have the combination of features they happen to want (everyone is different!) they won't rush over to Reaper.

Reaper will score with people who either have nothing, or can't afford much, or whose needs are not met by what they already have, or who find Reaper provides enough function to be an essential tool in the box, though perhaps not the only one - etc etc.

You know Art, this REAPER forum is the very first forum I ever posted anything in on the Internet. I write a lot (in my native language) but not on-line, only here and at KVR. Music is (alas) not my profession; literature is (yes, those good old fashioned dusty BOOKS).

I might decide to start a REAPER campaign in that forum, but my problem is that I lack say your knowledge about the ins and outs of audio recording and editing (software), plus that I still have to check an audio lexicon now and then to fully understand English terms for all the functions involved (when you came up here with 'ripple editing' I initially thought you were in a highly lyric mood).

Result is that I might harm REAPeR by praising it loudly first and falling silent afterwards when the pro's are starting to fire questions at me about automation issues etc.

Indeed, we have to be careful not to 'spam' other forums - heap praise on Reaper as a first post, then run - could be counterproductive.

The other forums I participate in are software-house hosted and it would be bad manners to try to 'push' a rival program there.

Hi! I run an online collaboration studio. Sometimes we get new players looking for an easy and affordable way to enter the online collab scene. I read about Reaper in the Sonar forum and decided to check it out. I think it's a great product.

I posted a link here on our site and an example of a quick mix using Reaper.

http://www.musicianscollaboration.co...hp?topic=433.0

Nice app Justin.

Thanks,

NickT

Good stuff Nick. It's good to see that not everyone on the Sonar forums are taking it as a personal attack on Sonar and just being defensive and criticizing the app. I personally like to hear about other apps and try them out for myself and then evaluate it if it is worth my time to go on further spending more time learning it, because I feel there is room for it in my toolbox of audio tools.

I won't be spending any more time in the Sonar forums though. It's two difficult having any constructive conversations.

Thanks Red,

I have been using cake since dos and version 3 I think it was. I now use Sonar PE 5. I don't really need another DAW, but something about Reaper caught my attention. I am having "fun" playing with this.

It is also a very good alternative for people that want to try out DAW recording.

The forums over there are hit and miss. I just pop in and search for something I haven't figured out. I am pretty sure every question has been asked. I don't like the flame wars, but must admit that Greg was pretty cool about the whole thing.

Regards,

NickT

Interestingly enough, Jokosher (which I'd never heard of until now) has, for its first inclusion in a Linux live CD distro, found itself in Aris OS.

Aris OS used to be called Reaper OS.

...Coincidence?

(actually i think jokosher, following in the unfortunate open source tradition of "who the hell picked THIS name," looks nothing like REAPER. it looks like the open source version of Garageband. but it's funny, no?)

Just looking for bass guitar related french forum, look what I fell on to:

http://forum.onlybass.com/index.php?showtopic=16178

Comment to be read, for those non-french:

"Easy to learn"
"fast and efficient editing"
"solid and stable"
"clean, easy to navigate GUI"
"Good support for VST and DX plug ins"
"cool MIDI recording"
"well thought of default configuration"
"low foot-print"
"affordable license"

etc.

Kind of redeem the Frenchys to me.

I agree and think this is a crucial point. Like the guy stating he preferred the screen view in one aspect of Reaper that he didn't have with Nuendo. Even given that Reaper does a combination of things (even better) than other leading i.e. larger, more expensive, brand names, you still won't topple that stigma and "prestige" that comes with form over function. Also there's a comfort zone that comes with familiarity and existing workflow, but I see Reaper as a compliment to users that have a sizable investment in something else, and a very attractive solution to new users that haven't made a choice/commitment to anything else. That's why I liked the VSTi slave capability, otherwise I may not have even bothered to look at Reaper. IMO, and I agree with what Art stated, Reaper will gain acceptance when it appeals to all users for what it can "add" that is missing in their current set-up, almost like a "plug-in" in itself for existing DAW users. In time and with consistent usage, people would discover that Reaper is more than just a utility, but I think Reaper would humbly begin there. Likewise and with a good bit of exposure, new DAW shoppers simply can't NOT try Reaper. A good plug through a review from SOS, EM, EQ or any of the higher profile mags and that would set it all in motion. The new question is, is Justin ready to handle an avalanche of new customers with tons of questions, suggestions and expectations to satisfy the big-time masses? Maybe a better question, does he really want to? The top is a great place to be, but the maintenance...! ;-)

Please do not read this Justin and Christophe. Somebody is turned off by the fast pace of Reaper development, what a poor way to dismiss a great piece of 1s and 0s:
