MIDI editor action "hide unused/unnamed note rows" not item-specific?
in the MIDI editor, the "hide unused/unnamed note rows" function appears not to be TRACK specific. it looks at all midi items in the project, rather than the item open in the midi editor.
the behavior i expected was that the midi editor would hide unused/unnamed note rows in the item -- in this example, it would only show 1 note after clicking the "fold" button (links to hide unused/unnamed action).
however, it references the other tracks, whose notes i'm intentionally trying to hide. the midi editor can't hide notes that have been used elsewhere in the project.
is this intended behavior? have i missed a setting?

As far as I'm concerned, this should be track-specific rather than item specific.

I can reproduce this, but maybe it's not a bug.
It hides all unused note rows of tracks that are set visible (the eye icon) in MIDI editor's track list.
It works like you want if you set only one track visible in track list.
However, after hiding unused note rows, changing track visibility or editability in track list can mess up the note display in piano roll. I think this is a bug. It looks like notes above the visible note rows are correctly indicated as small gray bars above the visible row. But notes below the visible rows are incorrectly shown in the visible rows.
Workaround is to run the "Hide unused note rows" action again after changing track visibility or editability in track list.

I'm not sure about that. Maybe it should work like it is now. If you have all items one single track set to be visible, then it works as track specific. If you have only single item visible and other items on the same track hidden, then it works as item specific.

my use case is a single action that switches TCP track focus, brings up FX chain, focuses/brings up MIDI item under edit cursor in midi editor, and hides unused/unnamed notes. this is a quick way to navigate different tracks/vstis and their recorded midi.
i haven't tried given jnif's suggestions, but it if this is an extra step it breaks my action

I've been crashing Reaper by using the hide/unhide function, switching back and fourth between two midi tracks. Have not been able to figure out exactly what triggers the crash but if I toggle back and fourth(in the course of track editing)it does crash. (a midi.dll error)
When ahead and crashed her again too grab a crash log. I seems like it's related to having one of the little track tool bars high lighted?

ok, so i figured what may be the only way to show only 1 midi item from the main screen, rather than cumulatively adding eyeballs: don't set "1 midi editor per project"
if you set 1 editor per project, the problem i describe above happens.
if you set 1 editor per track, you get a bunch of (in my case, docked) midi editors open and flip between them using your main screen actions -- this works OK, but you end up with a dock cluttered with midi editors. functional, but not ideal.
a midi editor action for the midi track list "turn off visibility for unselected tracks" would do the trick and could be built into these actions without scooping out any other functionality.
meanwhile, the midi track list visibility settings + "1 ME per project" removes the ability to effectively view and edit 1 item at a time...
