You can record-arm any track while being in the midi editor (right panel, record button), then launch the record with the appropriate shortcut or toolbar button (Menu Actions -> Action list -> Transport,Record. By default, Rec is CTRL+R)

I would like a record button there too. It's handy in some situations, e.g. on a touch device. A keyboard shortcut is no substitute, otherwise they wouldn't have ut the Play & Pause buttons there (much easier keyboard shortcut: Spacebar).

How about on the MIDI toolbar like they did here,
https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=195966

And of course you'd need to change the action IDs in the script from 40364 to 1013,...

Code:
reaper.Main_OnCommand(1013,0)
toggleState = reaper.GetToggleCommandState(1013)
is_new,name,sec,cmd,rel,res,val = reaper.get_action_context()
reaper.SetToggleCommandState(sec, cmd, toggleState)
better then nothing I suppose.

Definitely better than nothing, but not ideal. In fact I wish not only that there was a record button there, but also that the buttons were arranged in the same order as the main transport bar, which is not unreasonable considering the similarities.

This is up to the theme. The main transport can have reordered controls, so it's not a problem to match it. I just don't use a default theme, so that particular thing is fine over here

Does the theme you use put a record button there? (in which case please do share the details). Again, here's another example of how Reaper's default configuration really doesn't do the product justice.

No, MIDI transport is not themeable via WALTER, so can't reorder buttons on it. I was talking about the main transport. So, things can be matched, minus the record button.

I use Ctrl+R anyways, in both arrange and MIDI editor, so that's matched

I shall reply with a joke:

A. Three. One to hold the light bulb and two to turn the ladder.

Let me reply with a joke as well then. If you want to match the two transports, it's totally possible to remove the record button from the main transport, haha.

Wow this keeps getting better! You are a sick man, did I ever mention?

Or... we definitely could extend the left hand pinky and index fingers, and motion the keyboard towards the finger tips to press the keys Ctrl and R.

Q. How many record buttons does a MIDI editor have?
A. Including the play button, none.

Sorry just trying to get this thread back on the rails whilst preserving the mood.
