Default Zoom out to infinity

The one thing that bothers me every day with REAPER is it's habit to zoom out to "infinity" if multitouch gestures are used. Like in this short video:

I figure there _might_ be usecases for this zooming to unused space - but not for me or anyone I know of who uses REAPER.

Suggestion: give us an option in preferences to limit the zoom out to the size of the project - problem solved?

Hi there.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly. At least you can set in the prefs the horizontal zoom to be centered on the cursor.

Bye

Happy to hear it.
As I say. I'm not sure what it is about.

If you want your post to be more useful than mine, maybe you can just tell me what "if multitouch gestures are used" means.
I never had this zoom centering problem, visiting some "infinite" areas.

Thanx, Bye

It's related to issue explained here: https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=197038

It doesn't even have anything to do with multitouch gestures (which, FYI, mean when using a laptop trackpad, for example), happens with regular zooming methods too.

Ok.

Time to read the whole thread.

Still not getting the point.

That means that even if you specify the "centering thing to the cursor", you can find yourself in those areas ?

To strong for me.

FYI : Does that mean, for your information ?

That is correct.

And yes, FYI means that.

Bye
well as stated below a) this doesn't solve the issue and b) I really, really like tho zoom to mouse-pointer setting.
Anyway, I'll try to make my point clear - but it's also shown in the gif above: if you zoom out "too much", you almost always land in the middle of nowhere, seeing just a blank arrange area. You'll have to scroll all the way back to the left to get to your project - shrunk to some pixels. You could as a workaround limit the ratio of the zoom - but I like to zoom fast. So the best way would be to gibe us an option to stop the zooming out at the point where the hole project can be seen.

I teach REAPER a lot to podcasters who never touched a DAW before, every single one of them using al laptop with muligesture trackpad. And every single one of them, after two or three minutes: "dude, this is SO broken".

And so easy to fix.

Or just use an action to zoom to the whole project... I have it permanently bound to Page Down key.

So do I - but it's still a workaround and feels broken in the first place.

Interesting - but I can't figure out what setting that would be. The one that sounds like you described is "Playback Settings - Stop/Repeat at End of Project". Unfortunately, it doesn't affect the zoom behavior at all.

No, you go to Project Settings (Alt+Enter), then Advanced tab, "Limit project length, stop playback/recording at". It does lock the max zoom level to that value, but you can still scroll past it to copy stuff after the project limit, say.

Yes, I found it (thanks to the other thread - maybe we should close this one)
Problem is: you have to actively set a value there - there i no option "set always to project length".
My projects are podcasts - you never know how long they will become :-)

Yep - noticed that when I trieds it (from the same thread!) but frankly it is pretty easy to change that vaslue on the fly. Mind you I do mostly 3-4 minute songs, so not really an issue once I have it set to the general vicinity of the length I need.

Lucky you. My podcasts range from 20 minutes to 4 hours...
