You played yourself - rules are loose enough you could post any old noise and say it's a Steve Reich cover or something

Yeah, open nature of making a tune from scratch leaves everything subject to change at any point and it will happen for sure. But having the beginning, end and all the checkpoints defined is already half the battle.

This [original] song wouldn't be me first choice to post but it's the first one that actually is finished [kinda] from a big batch of remixes what I'm doing. It's just a ditty but I mucked about with it to see if it was a turd worth polishing. Probably it lacks dynamics, a bit too 'level'.
Sorry morgon I missed that you said you were participating. You want me to post it now? Or looks like you'd have until the 13th to keep working on it...
Yeh Fox I was procrastinating about participating but you could figure me in for the next one if you like, it's a rock song with 22% swing timing that I'm trying to beat into shape, I could use the extra pressure of the Song a Month Club to ensure that I finish it, it's called, for now at least, 'Caught in the Middle of Your Fire', cheers.
Ok, retracked. I have doubled clean guitar, some doubled dist guitar, clean lead, dist lead, two layers of keyboard pads, keyboard bass and obligatory radio ambience samples. Of course everything grew a bit during retracking and now it's like 40s longer, @ almost 4 minutes. Now - reamping and mixing.
I'm fullfiling my long time plan to simulate a broke 1995 band/project studio, so almost all the plugins are modelling sketchy 1990s rig.
I'm still short of a synth-pad machine, was Ensoniq SQ80 available for a broke band in 1990s? I know Roland Alpha Juno was (I lived with one in the same room long before I had an idea I can make music), but I'll be looking into analog ones last. Also not sure if Sansamp BDDI (and its bootleg copies) existed in the 90s.

I'll try to grow it into a tune, lets call it "Ida Random" for now (actual person with an awesome name, found it in the credits to "Silverado" I watched on Netflix the other day). I'll aim at something not-heavy, with mostly clean guitars, may come in handy for the next "ambient" playlist. And yeah, mono leads. Needs mono leads.
Allrighty, done. Turned noises above into the stuff below. There's clean guitars, turned a bit loud though and no mono leads, only a smattering of mono synth bass. Well close enough.
(It's quite experimental, mostly plugs I never used)
Yeah, that was faster than expected. Isn't the motivation the point of the thread though . It's good anyway, as I'm going to see a metal show tomorrow and I suspect my hearing might not be very mixing-dependable following days.
I'll still be remixing probably. And my "in progress" folder still has 89 projects left.

As I finished my tune in haste (repent at leisure) but I did meet the deadline, as a reward, would some of you mind listening to my song and offering some advice about improving my mix please? You don't need to say I can't sing or play instruments for toffee (I am aware of my limitations) but I would appreciate some tips about mixing
(perhaps this could be part of this finish-a-project initiative, so as to encourage us more coy amateurs to participate).
I started a brand new song this month and I'm on track to finishing it, woot!
@Burnsjethro, if you want to try and solicit more feedback you could start a thread in the collaborations forum and you can just copy the link I made for you here.
Thanks for the advice and link foxAsteria.
Listening to my tune after hearing some of the works on the forum you linked, I think I wait until I produce a better song.
It's a fine tune, mate. Don't get caught up in comparing yourself to others. Feedback (good or bad) will give you some perspective that you can then use to make better tracks.
But I know how it is, I'm often feeling too sensitive to share my work. Although it can sometimes be help to get some honest criticism early on, so that you know what you can focus on.
I'm a horrible procrastinator too, so I'll give it a try! I've currently started a new project, so sign me up! Maybe this will motivate me enough to finish it faster
It will be an alternative soundtrack for the movie "Up" I think. Not sure of the title yet though!
@foxAsteria nooo, I'm planning on making just one 3-4min song in the style of this movie, inspired by story and its wonderful soundtrack by Michael Giacchino

hello there, I'm mostly procrastinating and sleeping, but if somehow I'll manage to do something - it's a soundtrack to one of my fav movies or something... you can check my www.soundcloud.com/iamjonova if you want, thanks!
I've changed projects several times now. I'm wondering if that's the bigger obstacle; my lack of focus and commitment. Or maybe just another manifestation of my procrastination.
You can do it, shady. But maybe brainwreck was right and the penalty for giving up is not effective enough... More a comment towards myself there.
I already finished and submitted this month's REAPER Contest entry so I'm good until the end of September, when the next Joe Gilder VIP Challenge is due...after that my own Recordingfest entry isn't due until December 1st...
...until then I will continue to bask in the glow of being the the first in the club to overcome procrastination and finish my project...
^^^ Pretty f'in' cool man. A real genre bender. Never heard anything like it. Pretty out there, by pop standards, but... tasty, somehow. Good music for a long drive.
Great idea. I'm at the mixing stage of my last project but I can't stop trying out production tricks so it's taking forever.
Not yet ready to commit to a one month deadline though, as I'm currently in the middel of moving house, so my time in the studio is pretty limited momentarily. But that should clear in another week or so. I'll report back after that to accept the challenge.
@zeekat: I like Ida Random, very nice done. Now make a 20 minute version because it is way to short
Yea well done zeekat. I thought I listened to that when you posted initially, but I guess not. Pretty cool and I like the way the drum verb comes in and out.
Is that a sampled kit? I can't quite tell but the verb makes it sound very convincing if not. Good vibes.

Karoryfer Big Rusty Drums, drumkit for Sofrzando made of an authentic commie-made 1980s set, the verb is built in the library, I didn't add anything extra. Pretty original as virtual drumsets go, planned posting a review, but I'm too lazy to write it.

Versatile, too, I put it in my bucket list. The kit setup he describes as "weird" I want for my song 'Where there's Smoke there's Fire'
Nice one, shady! Looks like someone else's deadline slipped past them tho...I though mine was tomorrow and I was almost gonna give up...looks like I can procrastinate for 2 more days!
I've got a "carbon copy challenge" cover song due September 30 for the Joe Gilder VIP forum...it's a 2 month challenge and the first month has already passed without much effort put in on my part...the problem isn't one of procrastination, it's a lack of enthusiasm (caused by a variety of reasons) for the challenge as a whole...I'd put my name in for it, but in all honesty I don't care one way or the other if I finish it...

Whose then? Seems mine is due today, but if I figure the International Date Line I probably have a quite a few hours left
